UFC 137 video: Mitrione is going to learn some hard lessons according to Kongo?s manager

Matt Mitrione takes a major step up in competition on Saturday against veteran fighter Cheick Kongo. A confident Anthony McGann, Kongo's manager, knows the former Big 10 defensive lineman is dangerous, but thinks his guy will be too much to handle for a 5-0 fighter.

With Viacom?s purchase of Bellator, the future looks bright

With Viacom?s purchase of Bellator, the future looks brightMedia conglomerate Viacom, the company that owns both Spike TV and MTV, has jumped into the MMA game with the purchase of Bellator Fighting championships. USA Today reports that Viacom now has a majority stake in Bellator, and their fights will start airing on Spike in 2013, moving from MTV2.

Spike had a longtime relationship with the UFC, beginning with "The Ultimate Fighter" in 2005. That will end this December when the 14th season of "The Ultimate Fighter" comes to a close, and the UFC jumps to Fox networks. Spike will have rights to the UFC library until the end of 2012. When that agreement ends, Spike will have Bellator and its tournament-based fights in place.

Bellator began airing preliminary fights on Spike's website earlier this year, and CEO Bjorn Rebney told Cagewriter in a previous interview that he was excited to work with Spike because they already understand MMA.

"We're a great position in that our deal is with MTV networks, so it's that larger corporate umbrella. They control Spike, MTV, MTV2. You never know what the future will bring. The foreseeable future will be what it is, which is MTV2 and Spike.com for the prelims, but Spike is better than anyone in this space. They get it better than anyone."

This is nothing but good news for fans. It ensures that Bellator will be viable for years to come, giving fans more choices for MMA. With the UFC on Fox networks and Bellator with Viacom, there will be a greater volume of fights. Though the move to Spike is more than a year away, it will also give fans the option to watch in HD, a choice that doesn't exist with MTV2.

UFC 137 press conference video: Diaz faces tough questions, passes with flying colors

Nick Diaz has burned some in the media in the past, so when several media folks had the chance to grill him a bit they did it during today's final prefight press conference in Las Vegas.

A local television sports anchor went after Diaz particularly hard, but the highly volatile Diaz kept his cool. Watch the exchange on the full archive of the presser (25:50 mark).

What you need to know from this week on ?The Ultimate Fighter?

What you need to know from this week on ?The Ultimate Fighter?

Two fights in one show tonight, which is nothing but good news. More fighting means less time for silly pranks. Who wins the fights? Who is the most hated man int the UFC? Why is Jason "Mayhem" Miller making that face? Read on for spoilers and an episode recap.

The show starts out a reminder of how the last episode ended. Akira Corassani won, even though it seems like tapped in the first round, and Michael Bisping worried about the speck of wood in Jason Miller's eye before removing the plank from his own. Bisping continued to trash talk about his team's one victory, which helped Miller's assistant coach Ryan Parsons see the light.

"You're the most hated man in the UFC. I didn't get it before. I get it now," Parsons said.

Miller bragged that he had more money than Parsons. Bisping is a class act, as always.

Also a class act? Gator, Mayhem's dog who finally made an appearance in this episode. Adorable puppies make everything better.

Steven Siler (Team Miller) vs. Diego Brandao (Team Bisping) -- featherweight

Round 1: Brandao started with a flying knee that landed nowhere near Siler. Not long after that, he landed a huge right hook that sent Siler to the ground. Brandao followed up with some punches on the ground, but they weren't needed. The fight was over.

Again, Bisping started with the trash talk. Miller responded, "Could you be any more of a douchebag?" Bisping just blathered on after that, saying not a whole lot of note. Miller congratulated Brandao, who wants to win so that he could support his parents.

Bisping continued to trash talk all the way into the locker room, infuriating Miller's coaches. Miller calmed them down, but was befuddled by where Bisping gets his confidence. I don't get it, either.

While Bisping tries to plot out the next fight, Team Mayhem's Roland Delorme showed his badly swollen foot to his coaches. Miller and Parsons are worried that it's a skin infection, and they send him to the doctor.

At the fight announcements, Bisping runs through a long list of rules to keep fighters from "looking like [expletives.]" What he fails to mention is that his fighters are guilty of violating most of the rules. He calls out John Dodson (Team Mayhem*) vs. John Albert (Team Bisping), meaning that T.J. Dillashaw will face Delorme in the final bout.

*Considering Dodson's Benedict Arnoldian ways earlier in the season, he is deserving of an asterisk. His team still doesn't talk to him much, but he says he does not have any regrets because, "If you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin."

Dodson (Mayhem*) vs. Albert (Bisping ) -- bantamweights

Round 1: Dodson is the exact ball of energy that Miller described him as. He starts out by peppering Albert with kicks, but eventually clips him with a punch and a knee. Albert responds with a takedown, but Dodson works his way out from the bottom. He gets top position, then the fight gets back to stand-up. Albert tries to finish the round with a takedown, but Dodson shakes him off, and gets top position to land a bevy of strikes.

Round 2: This round was much slower, and featured more jawing between Bisping and Miller early on then actual striking. Albert landed intermittent kicks, and Dodson got off a punch occasionally. He backed Albert up with every punch. Again, Albert tried to get a takedown by jumping on Dodson's back, but Dodson landed on top and had better position. Dodson ended the round with a takedown.

Via the judges decision, Dodson won and moved to the next round. He admitted that it was a conservative game plan.

Bisping ends the episode by peeking into Team Miller's ready room, and did even more smack talk. It's not getting old or anything. He ended it by saying, "Go back to 'Bully Beatdown."

"I know one bully," Miller responded.

UFC 137 classic: Diaz beats the heck out of Penn in slugfest, the Hawaiian may retire

UFC 137 classic: Diaz beats the heck out of Penn in slugfest, the Hawaiian may retire

LAS VEGAS -- Nick Diaz is nearly uncontrollable, but there's no denying the Stockton psycho is a brilliant fighter.

Diaz's roll continued at UFC 137 as he battered B.J. Penn over three rounds on his way to a unanimous decision victory, 29-28, 29-27 and 29-28, in the main event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Update: Diaz and Penn won the Fight of the Night bonus, good for $75,000 each.

Diaz, an import from Strikeforce where he was the 170-pound champion, has now won 11 straight. He hasn't lost a fight since late 2007.

UFC 137 classic: Diaz beats the heck out of Penn in slugfest, the Hawaiian may retire

Following the fight, both fighters were extremely emotional. Looking for UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, Diaz ran around the cage yelling "Where are you Georges?" When he got on the microphone, his fiery take continued.

"I don't think Georges is hurt. I think he's scared. Where you at Georges?" Diaz said during his conversation with Joe Rogan.

[Related: UFC 137: Penn, 'Cro Cop' set to retire after losses]

When the arena camera panned to GSP, the champ simply shook his head and he put his hands up to act like he was trembling in fear. St. Pierre was originally slated for Saturday night's card against Carlos Condit, but had to pull out last week with a knee injury.

UFC 137 classic: Diaz beats the heck out of Penn in slugfest, the Hawaiian may retire

When B.J. Penn spoke with Rogan, he was very down saying that this might be it for him. The 32-year-old has his second child on the way and said he didn't want to go home in the future looking like this.

"This" was a bruised mess. His left eye was almost completely shut.

Penn (16-8-2, 12-7-2 UFC) was extremely competitive early in the fight. He landed the heavier shots in the opening four minutes and crowded Diaz so he couldn't use his distance to his advantage. Then conditioning became an issue as it often does for Penn at 170 pounds. That's an even bigger problem against a guy like Diaz, who's got incredible stamina.

Diaz (26-7, 7-4 UFC) kept pushing forward in the second and Penn started to put his back on the cage. That's a death knell in fighting. Diaz bullied him and got off six or eight punches for every shot Penn returned. The Hawaiian lost the second round badly, but showed some life in the third.

Over the final five minutes, the fighters wailed away on each other, producing one of the best rounds in recent MMA history. Diaz's volume told the story. The California-native attempted 350 strikes and landed 178 to just 88 for Penn.

"It feels good to be back fighting. In the second round I turned it on and tried to take him out. He started going on defense in round three. Things would have been different if there were five rounds," Diaz said. "I would have taken him out for sure in the fourth. B.J. is one of the best there is and not that many would go out there and take all those punches."

Diaz was originally slated for the UFC 137 main event against Georges St. Pierre, but was pulled because he failed to handle his media responsibities. Diaz no-showed two big press conferences. Dana White stuck with Diaz and re-booked him for this dream fight against Penn. It turned out to be a nightmare for Penn, who was unable to attend the postfight press conference.

Fake and real Lesnar look right at home in WWE 12 video game

The UFC allowed its biggest pay-per-view star Brock Lesnar to appear in the latest WWE video game. The Lesnar open in the game is pretty cool and probably has wrestling fans wishing this were true:

"Now after an extended absence ... he's back! And this time, the gloves are off. He's bigger, badder and better than ever before."

The real Lesnar then emerges. We don't get much of a look, but Lesnar does look noticably thinner in the face and a little smaller across the shoulders. After multiples battles with diverticulitis and adjusting to a new diet, it's hard to imagine Lesnar carrying 285-300 pounds like he used to.

Anderson Silva?s next challenge? NASCAR

Anderson Silva?s next challenge? NASCAR

Anderson Silva is already at the top of the MMA world. He tops the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound list, is on a 15-fight win streak, and even danced on stage with Justin Bieber. He is waiting to see if the UFC will give him Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort, or the winner of this weekend's bout between Mark Munoz and Chris Leben next. What more could he do? Try driving a car really, really fast with no fear of getting a ticket.

Silva will be the pace car driver at the Kobalt Tools 500 in Phoenix on Nov. 13. Yahoo! Sports' own NASCAR blogger Jay Busbee said that Silva will lead the field around the track before peeling off to let the rest of the field doits thing. Pace cars rarely go any faster than 55 mph, and he's driving a Toyota Venza, a car that NASCAR circles view as a soccer mom's ride.

Darn. Silva won't be breaking any land speed records in Phoenix.

It's unlikely that any of Silva's fight skills will come in handy at the races. Unfortunately, front kicks to the face and triangle chokes aren't part of car racing. Though drivers do get testy with each other and sometimes even throw punches, a spinning backfist probably won't help in the infield.

The closest parallels come in the way fighters and drivers celebrate. Carl Edwards, the points leader, does a backflip off of his car when he wins, much like Jose Aldo and Eddie Alvarez. Indianapolis 500 winners douse themselves in milk. "King Mo" Lawal did the same with a Rockstar Energy drink.

Mastering Whoops

Whoops are one of the toughest objects on a motocross course. Period. They are intentionally designed to slow you down and rob you of momentum. Because of the degree of difficulty, many riders struggle through them and are intimidated to practice them. If you watched the Supercross Final in Las Vegas, I?m sure seeing Stewart [...]

Overeem calls for first round KO of Lesnar, Mir says ?not so fast my friend?

Overeem calls for first round KO of Lesnar, Mir says ?not so fast my friend?

There was a time Frank Mir disliked Brock Lesnar so much that he admitted his life was completely consumed by the goal of defeating the behemoth, but that doesn't mean the Las Vegas native is beyond being objective when it comes to analyzing a fight.

Alistair Overeem is confident he'll crush Lesnar in their year-end fight. Mir says it won't happen at UFC 141.

"Honestly, I think Brock will win pretty easily ? I think we're going to see the closest thing to a grappler versus striker match you'll see nowadays," Mir told ESPN.com. "Brock is going to cover up; maybe throw one jab. He'll rush Overeem to the cage, reach down for a leg and rip him down? I don't think he's going to get off his back. I'd be very shocked ? I'd applaud Overeem if he got off his back."

Mir has a pretty solid wrestling background and possesses world class jiu-jitsu skills, but he was overwhelmed by Lesnar's size (6-foot-4, 285 pounds) and knowledge/execution of positioning himself on top of a downed opponent at UFC 100.

The 6-5, 253-pound Overeem is a good striker and has added to his grappling game over the years, but is he going to be able to keep Lesnar away?

Overeem also believes it'll be grappler vs. striker, but says the guy who likes standings and banging has the advantage.

"I'm very confident. It's going to be a knockout victory in the first round. He's not going to get out of the first round. It will not come to the second round. He's a strong guy, a very dangerous guy. But, I think I've got what it takes to stop him. And I got what it takes to stop him in the first round," said Overeem (2:05 mark).

You tell us: What fight are you most looking forward to in 2011?

You tell us: What fight are you most looking forward to in 2011?Through the end of the year, the MMA world will go on a massive run of fights, taking time off only for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Nearly every weekend will feature events from the UFC, Strikeforce and Bellator.

Ben Askren vs. Jay Hieron at Bellator 56: Askren and Hieron have been jawing at each other over this bout since Hieron won the right to fight Askren for the Bellator welterweight belt. Askren's been working on his striking with Duke Roufus and his band of strikers in Milwaukee. Will that, combine with his world-class wrestling, be enough to hold off Hieron?

Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson at UFC on Fox 1: Though Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos will be shown to the masses in the UFC's first fight on Fox, it's hard not to get hyped about Guida and Henderson's scrap. Both fighters are known for putting on exciting bouts and ridiculous conditioning. The best part? This bout should decide the next challenger for the UFC lightweight belt.

Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC 139: Pick your favorite storyline in this fight. Henderson's return to UFC after winning the Strikeforce light heavyweight championship. Two PRIDE champions meeting up. Shogun's chance to get revenge for Henderson's win over Rua's brother. Two men with scary striking power being thrown in the Octagon. No matter which way you look at it, this fight should be fun.

Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida at UFC 140: The UFC light heavyweight champ will get another chance to defend the belt against a former champion. Machida is 1-2 in his last fights, and like Jones, was once considered an unsolvable puzzle. This match-up will turn the main event at UFC 140 into a chess game.

Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem at UFC 141: Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Overeem needed a big opponent for his first bout in the UFC, and opponents don't get much bigger than former champ Brock Lesnar. For Lesnar, it will be his first fight back since losing the belt. The Octagon will need reinforcement for this bout.

With so many fights coming up before the end of the year, there's a pretty good chance that Cagewriter didn't list your favorite fight. Vote in the poll, and tell us your favorite in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC 137 video: ?Cowboy? Cerrone wants all the big boys, says Melendez doesn?t deserve title shot

Donald Cerrone admits that the mental game held him back in the past. He's traditionally been a big talker, but it didn't always translate in the Octagon. That's changed since the middle of 2010.

In recent fights, it's all come together for "Cowboy," who looks to add to a five-fight win streak this Saturday against Denis Siver at UFC 137.

The new Cerrone is finishing fights in brutal fashion and he's retained the ability to talk trash with the best of them. During UFC 137 workout day, Cerrone called out Gilbert Melendez, Ben Henderson and even featherweight Nam Phan. An extremely juiced Cerrone said he wants another fight before the end of 2011.

Cerrone went into further detail on Melendez and Henderson during a Monday interview with Larry Pepe.

"I don't think [Melendez] should get an instant title shot. I don't think he should be able to come over from Strikeforce and get an instant title shot. I think he should come over from Strikeforce and have to fight Cowboy," Cerrone told ProMMARadio (49:00 mark).

The 28-year-old said if he was given a choice of Melendez or Henderson, he'd choose BenHen because he was "embarrassed" by him at WEC 48 when he was choked out.

Cerrone's finished 3-of-4 fights, but his last victory over Charles Oliveira was huge. He did it via strikes.

"When I was kickboxing, I was knocking people out all the time. I come over to MMA with smaller gloves and a faster pace and I can't even touch anybody. There's was definitely a lot of doubt. 'What am I doing wrong? What aren't I doing?' Slowly, I'm starting to find me again and figure out where I need to be and go have fun."
