Guida vs. Henderson will be ?whirlwind of hair and cardio?

Clay Guida and Ben Henderson's bout at UFC on Fox will not be aired on the debut of the UFC on network television, but it will be exciting. Knowing how both fighters have endless cardiovascular endurance and mops of curly hair, Guida described the bout that will run on Facebook as a likely "whirlwind of hair and cardio."

Guida won four fights in a row to get to this bout. Most recently, he beat Anthony Pettis in a decision. Henderson, the former WEC champ, dropped a five-round bout to Pettis in December, but since then beat Mark Bocek and Jim Miller. Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar's next bout will reportedly be the main event of UFC Japan in late February. Should it be against the winner of tomorrow's bout? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC on Fox prelims: ?Bruce Leroy? finds a home at bantamweight, Rosa and Pierce win too

UFC on Fox prelims: ?Bruce Leroy? finds a home at bantamweight, Rosa and Pierce win too

ANAHEIM -Alex "Bruce Leroy" Cacares carries a huge persona, but not big enough to overcome the lack of size he battled at lightweight during Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter.'

Now that he's dropped all the way down to 135 pounds, it looks like he might be a real prospect.

Cacares' athleticism was impressive during what mostly a battle on the feet. He had Cole Escovedo confused throughout and rolled to a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three scorecards. It was his first win in the UFC.

"I feel great and I don't think it has all registered yet. This was my third fight under the UFC banner and considering that I lost my first two I knew that tonight it was do or die," said the 23-year-old Cacares (6-4, 1-2 UFC). "After my last loss I felt it was my conditioning that cost me the win. House, the cut-man, told me I needed to work on my endurance and he gave me a list with some different sprints to do. I think those definitely helped me get the victory tonight. It's my dream to fight in the UFC and I want to make sure it lasts as long as possible."

Escovedo, 29, has a lot of experience around the world. He was once a WEC champ, but he had trouble tracking down Cacares. Cacares did a nice job with his offensive game mixing in a variety of kicks with some good two and three punch combinations.

Escovedo was surprised by the one-sided decision and said he had some troubles with his weight cut that left him lacking explosiveness.

"Nothing that Alex hit me with hurt me in the fight. He didn't have any power on his punches and we knew that coming into the fight. I accidentally cut to 134 yesterday and I think that hurt my stamina in the fight and cost me the win. I'm extremely disappointed with my performance," said Escovedo.

UFC on Fox prelims: ?Bruce Leroy? finds a home at bantamweight, Rosa and Pierce win too

Pierce edges Bradley using crisp left hand

Mike Pierce and Paul Bradley are carbon copies. Both fighters have a good wrestling background and developing striking. Pierce was a little better with his hands tonight and got slight nod on the scorecards in a split decision victory, 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29.

Much of the fight was spent battling in the clinch for head control and firing off inside punches. Pierce did more damage. Anytime the fighters broke, Pierce (13-4, 5-2 UFC) did a solid job of landing his left hook. Bradley's eyes were pretty busted up by the end of the fight.

This was win No. 5 in the UFC for Pierce. He was on a great run and moving up the rankings until he met another good wrestler in Johny Hendricks during the summer. He lost that fight via unanimous decision. This gets him back on track.

Bradley (18-4, 0-2 UFC) is a tough opponent, he just hasn't been able to turn the corner in big fights. He's lost to Pierce and Rafael Natal in the UFC and back in 2009, he lost to eventual Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold at 185 pounds.

This was actually a rematch of a 2009 fight outside the organization. Pierce won that night by unanimous decision.

Rosa wins battle of the clinch to get first UFC win

Aaron Rosa made the wise move of getting back to his natural class down at light heavyweight. His stamina was much better and when he needed to close strong late against UFC newcomer Matt Lucas, he got the job done.

A fresher Rosa landed some heavy shots inside during a fight that featured 80 percent clinch work along the cage. The veteran got his first UFC win via majority decision, 30-26, 30-26 and 28-28, in fight No. 1 of the UFC on Fox card in the Honda Center.

Rosa (17-4, 1-1 UFC) lost his promotional debut back in June at UFC 131. Heavyweight Joey Beltran beat him up that night as Rosa entered the cage in excess of 260 pounds.

Tonight, he was a trim 205 and it made a big difference. Lucas landed four takedowns, but Rosa was able to get to his feet quickly in all four cases. Lucas (14-3) worked the takedown for most of the 15 minutes and it tired him badly. He spit out his mouthpiece on three occasions. Referee John McCarthy took a point away from Lucas in the second.

"I was very happy to go out there and get the win in such a big show. When the people started cheering it made all the work worthwhile," Rosa said. "My hands are feeling a little roughed up but I'm very excited to get back in the Octagon as soon as possible."

It's not surprising at all to hear Rosa's hands were hurt. He landed a lot of heavy shots in close quarters. He really beat up Lucas with elbows to the head, side and back during the clinches.

"I was way too reluctant and I couldn't seem to find my rhythm or put my strikes together the way that I planned to. I was stalling, I think being under the lights for the first time in an event like this had something to do with it. Hopefully I'll be back to show the fans what I can do," said Lucas.

UFC 138 weigh-in: Leben and Munoz ready to go, Alves not so much

Chris Leben and Mark Munoz got the job done in anticipation of their big middleweight contender showdown. Both clocked in at 186 pounds before tomorrow's UFC 138 card in Birmingham, England.

Leben's won 4-of-5 fights, including his last fight when he destroyed Wanderlei Silva in just 27 seconds. Munoz is 6-1 at middleweight with recent wins over Aaron Simpson, Demian Maia and C.B. Dollaway.

The staredown was a little heated with the fighters coming together nose-to-nose. Dana White separated them quickly as the fighters talked a little trash.

Thiago Alves, who has a long history of struggling to make welterweight, missed at 172. The last time he fought in the U.K. was at UFC 85 against Matt Hughes. He missed that weekend by four pounds.

Update: Alves made weight. Maggie Hendricks has more details on Alves' struggles.

Thiago Alves blows weight on first try for UFC 138

Thiago Alves blows weight on first try for UFC 138

Another trip to England meant another gaffe at the scale for welterweight fighter Thiago Alves. At the weigh-ins for UFC 138, Alves weighed in at 172 on the first try, one pound over the welterweight limit for a non-title fight. He needed an extra hour to drop the last pound.

Alves also missed weight for his UFC 85 win over Matt Hughes and his UFC 117 fight Jon Fitch. After the loss to Fitch, Alves began work with noted MMA nutritionist Mike Dolce, and had no problems at the scale for bouts at UFC 124 and UFC 130. This weekend's bout with Pappy Abedi seemed to be a chance for Alves to correct his course after losing to Rick Story in May, but not making weight on the first try is not a great way to impress for Alves to impress his bosses.

Even with Dolce's help, Alves is still a muscle-bound fighter who only can drop so much fat and water weight before a bout. He is also not getting any younger, and fighters generally have a tougher time cutting weight as they age. Anthony Johnson struggled to make welterweight for years, and has finally made the decision to move up to middleweight to face Vitor Belfort. Should Alves do the same? Tell us your thoughts in the comments, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

UFC on Fox: Judging the first network broadcast

UFC on Fox: Judging the first network broadcast

With the UFC's first broadcast on Fox over and a new heavyweight champion in place, everyone involved with the show will likely relax over the weekend and enjoy the spoils of this massive event. On Monday, they'll sit down and look at what worked and what didn't.

The one-hour broadcast was well-paced and informative, but far from perfect. There were elements that the UFC and Fox should definitely do again, and a few they need to change.

The let's-do-this-again:

-- The use of the NFL on Fox music: Hearing the opening strains of the "NFL on Fox" music gave me goosebumps, and it sent a clear message from the start that the UFC on Fox would get the same big game treatment that the NFL gets every Sunday.

-- The history montage: UFC on Fox took place 18 years to the date after UFC 1, and the broadcast started with a pitch-perfect montage to show how far the promotion has come. Not only did it nod to hardcore and longtime fans, it also showed off some of the UFC's best-known stars.

-- The Dana White/Brock Lesnar segments: Lesnar was not afraid to verbally spar with his boss, and that made the segments more fun. Lesnar made it a little bit too much about himself, but White going back and forth with an intelligent fighter who knows how to speak on camera should be repeated.

-- Primetime, and the Primetime segments repeated: The Primetime special that aired on Fox to introduce viewers to dos Santos and Velasquez was smart, emotional, and fleshed out two men who were capable of such violence as real people. Not surprisingly, segments from those Primetimes were woven into the UFC on Fox broadcast and reminded new viewers that Velasquez is a doting father and dos Santos is a smiling mama's boy.

-- Introduction and rules from Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan: This was very well-done. It's clear that Goldberg and Rogan were well-rehearsed and prepared for this segment. They didn't belabor the rules, and gave viewers things to look out for from each fighter.

The let's-make-some-changes:

-- Identify people on the red carpet: This was a chance for both the UFC and Fox to push their stars, but they whiffed by not identifying who each person was. I watch plenty of television, but didn't recognize many of the non-athletes on the red carpet.

-- Remind Dana White to take a breath: He was excited and nervous, but my Twitter timeline was filled with people who don't usually watch MMA saying that they didn't understand White. Perhaps he can use the advice Mrs. Excell gave me in sixth grade about speaking into a microphone: If you think you're talking too slowly, you're just about perfect.

-- Make room for another fight, or at least show a highlight reel of the undercard: Something that the UFC has done much better than boxing is build up stars by stacking an undercard. It was Fox's decision to have just one fight, but they had a prime opportunity to highlight the exciting Benson Henderson win over Clay Guida, DaMarques Johnson's knockout or Ricardo Lamas' submission. With not so much as a highlight montage, they whiffed on that.

Afterwards, White said that the production went perfectly. On the flip side, CNBC sports business Darren Rovell did an unscientific Twitter poll to ask non-MMA fans if they would watch again based on Saturday night's broadcast. He has nearly 20,000 followers, and 46.2 percent of those who replied said that they are less likely to watch.

That is due mostly to the short fight. The UFC didn't get a chance to showcase how exciting their fights can be in just 1:04, but did the broadcast help or hinder? Anything the broadcast needs to add or subtract? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

What the sports world had to say about UFC on Fox

MMA fans of every background were excited to see Saturday night's fight on Fox, and that included many from the world of professional sports.

The NBA is locked out, so plenty of players had time to watch the fights on a Saturday when they would normally be playing games. That includes Luol Deng from the Chicago Bulls.

What the sports world had to say about UFC on Fox

Both Arizona Cardinals star Larry Fitzgerald and Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia picked Cain Velasquez to win, and were impressed by Junior dos Santos.

What the sports world had to say about UFC on Fox

Shane Victorino, who plays for the Phillies and is a longtime MMA fan, said that the fight turned out just as he expected.

What the sports world had to say about UFC on Fox

But not everyone was as thrilled with the fight. Pro wrestler C.M. Punk and Philadelphia 76er Evan Turner were not pleased with the length of the fight.

Josh Grispi would like your help in fighting his father?s cancer

Featherweight Josh Grispi recently decided to take a step away from MMA to spend time with his father, who has brain cancer, and newborn son. Grispi now would like some help in taking care of his father.

Grispi is hosting two fundraisers to help his father with the extensive medical bills that come with getting cancer. You can help out two ways:

-- If you're going to be around Braintree, Mass., on November 25, go to the fundraiser. It costs $25, and will have auctions and raffles for UFC memorabilia, and appearances by fighters.

-- If you, like me, can't be in Boston on Thanksgiving weekend, make a donation online here.

Grispi made $15,000 in his last fight, a loss in June to George Roop. Considering that cancer bills can reach upwards of $500,000, every little bit can help. If you've enjoyed Grispi's submissions of Mark Hominick, L.C. Davis or Jens Pulver, then consider helping out as much as you can.

Leben?s clouded vision stops main event at UFC 138, Munoz now in title contention

Chris Leben is a gamer, so for Mark Munoz to get the brawler to bail on a fight was a huge accomplishment.

In a showdown of top 10 middleweights, Munoz used his takedowns, ground work and relentless pace to brutalize Leben in what finished up as a referee's stoppage at the end of the second round.

"I feel amazing! This means so much, I went out there and gave it my all," said Munoz (11-2, 7-2 UFC). "It wasn't a surprise that it ended so quickly, I predicted the second round all week."

Following a rough second round, Leben was asked multiple times by referee Marc Goddard if he could see. The 31-year-old, who lives in Hawaiian, kept saying he couldn't see and the fight was waved off.

Leben?s clouded vision stops main event at UFC 138, Munoz now in title contention

"It's hard to fight when you're choking on blood. He got me good," said Leben, who struggled to deal with the blood flowing from a cut next to his left eye. "I was sliding all over. Kind of helped his grappling, I couldn't stick to anything. [...] Munoz is a national champ in wrestling. He's as good as they come on the ground. [...] He outwrestled me tonight."

Leben (22-8, 12-7 UFC) was brimming with confidence coming into the fight following the 27-second destruction of Wanderlei Silva at UFC 132. Maybe too confident. The southpaw looked to throw huge bombs at the former college wrestling star, but consistently got caught low as Munoz worked for takedowns.

"I knew I had to look out for left hand. He came with it. I had to calm my brawling instinct and stick with my wrestling. I get to my angles, utilize my wrestling and utilized my ground and pound, and that's what I did."

Munoz scored his first takedown just 27 seconds in and landed two more during the first round. Leben minimized damage in each case and got to his feet relatively quickly.

Leben actually scored his own takedown with 2:55 left and landed some good shots on Munoz, but when the Filipino-American fighter got to his feet his opponent took a deep breath. It only got worse from there for Leben as Munoz kept pushing the pace.

Just 52 seconds into the second, Munoz scored another takedown. It stay down for the next 49 seconds and Munoz landed some bombs. Leben got up, but was dumped again with just over three minutes left. That's when Munoz landed a massive shot that opened the cut.

Blood was everywhere and the ref paused the fight to have a doctor check the cut. Leben said he could continue and threw some bombs on the restart before it hit the floor again where Munoz transitioned to a dominant position. He eventually mounted Leben and really laid a beating on him.

Munoz, who trains at times with UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, told Rogan and the audience he want a shot at the belt.

"I paid my dues in this weight class and I think I deserve a title shot," Munoz said. "Anderson Silva is by far the best pound for pound in the world. I give him all the respect and honor, but right now I think I deserve a title shot. I consider him a friend. Right now I would love to get a title shot."

Traversing Flat Corners

One of the great things about a worn down track is the help from ruts and berms. Sure they can make things difficult, but they essentially help us keep our speed up in the corners. Just like in NASCAR, the angled surface allows the bike to lean over and still find plenty of traction. However, [...]

UFC 138: Barao wrecks Pickett with huge knee

Renan Barao is for real. The Brazilian's won 27 fights in a row. Today he added Brad Pickett to his list of victims.

A Barao knee was the beginning of the end for Pickett. He couldn't hold off the onslaught and eventually submitted because of a rear-naked choke at 4:09 of the first round.

"I fought really hard and had a great camp. My power, technique, skill was all fantastic and I couldn't be happier with this win against a tough opponent," said Barao.

Pickett is a dangerous striker, but Barao was more than willing from the start to brawl with him. The first two minutes were highly entertaining with the fighters coming together every few seconds and throwing recklessly at each other. But it was the much faster Barao winning many of the exchanges.

Barao wasn't hurting Pickett, so the Brit began to try and walk through the shots that's when he got caught by a nasty knee right on the chin with 1:55 left in the first.

Pickett stopped in his tracks, took another quick right and then absorbed a lightning quick five-punch combination that floored. He was fighting for survival on the ground and tried to scramble on his knees. Barao alertly jumped on his back and almost immediately slapped on a body lock.

Pickett (20-6, 0-1 UFC) did a solid job of avoiding the choke for few seconds before Barao latch his right arm across the Brit's face. It wasn't really a choke, but the pressure on Pickett's jaw was too much to take and he tapped.

Pickett and Barao received the Fight of the Night bonus for their effort good for $70,000.

Cesar Gracie comments on claims that GSP was ?jumping? and ?running? at UFC 137

Let the Nick Diaz vs. Georges St-Pierre games begin.

Ten days ago, St-Pierre pulled out of his main event fight against Carlos Condit because of a knee injury suffered during training. Camp Diaz and several others in attendance at UFC 137 say they witness something odd during the event, a very spry GSP.

One media member claimed he saw St-Pierre, who was cornering Francis Carmont, jump off the cage during the event.

Diaz's manager Cesar Gracie didn't like what he saw on fight night.

"He ran past me earilier. He literally ran past me. I don't know the guy personally. [...] I'm gonna tell you guys something right now ... Nick Diaz missed a press conference and he's here and fought. The guy that went to the press conference didn't fight. That's all I got to say about it."

Gracie went on to say more.

"I'm not going to say (GSP wasn't injured). I have no idea, but Nick is injured and he still fought. Nick hurt his hamstring. He's got a knee injury. [...] Despite his injuries he was here for the fans. One guy jumping off the cage, running around ... it's disheartening."

Diaz lost his shot at St-Pierre after he no-showed two UFC 137 prefight press conferences in Toronto and Las Vegas. Dana White said Diaz missed a total of six flights, including Monday.
