But Joe Silva gave him no bargain in Bocek, Bocek is one tick off the top tier and usually wins unless he's fighting a legitimate title contender. Kevin Iole: Hominick is one of the division's best fighters, which he proved in his loss to champion Jose Aldo. His knockout loss to the Korean Zombie his last time out can be discounted. He got caught on the button just as the bout began. I think he's a cut above Yagin skill-wise and will break him down before stopping him. Pick -- Mark Hominick TKO2 Eddie Yagin
Maggie Hendricks: After two losses in a row, Hominick needs a big win. He has been training with Jeff Curran and his team to shake things up for this bout, which shouldn't last too long. Pick -- Mark Hominick KO2 Eddie Yagin
Jackson Torres, fan: Hominick needs a win badly as he has suffered back to back losses and a 7 second knock out at the hands of the Korean Zombie. Maggie Hendricks: The classic match-up of young buck vs. veteran will turn on how Torres handles his first fight back since being cut from the UFC for an offensive tweet. Jackson Torres, fan: Miguel hasn't fought for a while and McDonald is on a roll right now coming off of that brutal KO of Soto. I feel Miguel will show some ring rust while McDonald utilizes his striking early and finishing it. Pick -- McDonald R2 TKO

Kevin Iole: When Schaub is clicking, he's a handful for any heavyweight. He makes mistakes that cause him troubles, but I think he'll land something flashy and stop Big Ben. Pick -- Brendan Schaub KO2 Ben Rothwell
Maggie Hendricks: Schaub's loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in Brazil was tough to take, and he'll want to erase that memory as soon as possible. His speed will be too much for Rothwell. Pick -- Brendan Schaub KO1 Ben Rothwell.
William Corral, fan: I'm going out on a limb here and picking Big Ben Rothwell. Not that I think he's a better fighter, but Schaub will break his hand from repeated punches to Big Ben's Noggin, and then Rothwell will collapse from exhaustion on top of Schaub in the 2nd round. You could classify that as a submission.
Rory MacDonald vs. Che Mills
Maggie Hendricks: Though Mills impressed with a 40-second TKO of Chris Cope, MacDonald is quite the jump up in competition. MacDonald's well-rounded game will be much too much. Pick -- MacDonald TKO2 Che Mills
Jackson Torres, fan: This is a very interesting match as Mills destroyed Cope in his UFC debut, how ever Cope isn't that highly ranked in the division and we still don't know what Mills can really do. I feel Rory has the experience when it comes to opponents and that he will get away with the win. I expect this to be fight of the night. Pick -- MacDonald R3 D
Champion Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans
Kevin Iole: I think the long odds favoring Jones are ludicrous. I've been writing for a long time that Evans is a terrific fighter who, for some reason, doesn't get enough credit. I think his quickness and his power will cause Jones a lot of issues. But it's hard to see Evans winning given Jones' takedown defense, his length and his ability to land hard shots from any position. Evans gives him some anxious moments, but Jones is worthy of the hype and should pull it out to retain his belt. Pick -- Jon Jones W5 Rashad Evans
Maggie Hendricks: Thank heavens this fight is finally happening. More than a year of build-up is plenty. If Evans can hold off Jones' attacks to last five rounds, he should win. Unfortunately for Evans, I don't think he will. Jon Jones Sub3 Rashad Evans
Timothy Milloff, fan: Rashad Evans has always been underrated. He came up the ranks the hard way, thanks to Dana. He is a great fighter and a great guy, always the fighter the fans boo. He will upset Jones like Ali did Liston.

To start out this week's rants, not everyone was disappointed that the #RallyForMarkHunt was stopped by UFC president Dana White.
Meh. Good. Better, more qualified options exist than Mark Hunt. If Hunt deserves it, he'll show it with the rest of 2012. Giving him a title shot now would be pretty weak. Not sure it'd even be exciting. Good chin vs. Slugger doesn't always equal good fight. Sometimes it just means assbeating, and his ground game is still pedestrian. -- Dylan Schmeyer
Alexander Gustafsson impressed with his win over Thiago Silva. Several Cagereaders want to see him fight Ryan Bader, though one wants to see him fight a former champ.
A number one contender match vs. Bader seems to be the most appropriate matchup. Hendo was guaranteed a title shot and won't risk losing it by fighting a dangerous up-and-comer like Gustafsson. -- Grady Woods

Finally, most readers' respect for Brian Stann grew even more after he stopped his own bout against Alessio Sakara, though one reader didn't think he should have stopped.

I think it's too bad for the fans. The man is trying to be classy and I respect that, but he's in a sport that has rules. If he truly didn't want to hurt Sakara he could have backed out of the bout and let someone else take it, but he chose to compete and agreed to the rules, one of which is you go until the bell or referee stops you. If he had stopped when he did and Sakara had recovered (and won?) he'd be crying foul that the bout was not stopped. In other words, he got lucky that the referee agreed and next time he should respect the fans, the UFC, the other fighters and the referee who all help him make a great living by fighting to his full ability and abiding by the rules instead of acting as assistant referee in his bouts. -- Joshua Smith

‘Kid’ Yamamoto saves injured man’s life at Tokyo subway
Yamamoto jumped onto the tracks when he saw the injured man, who was bleeding heavily from his forehead. He tried to lift him off, but couldn't do it on his own. Yamamoto convinced bystanders to help him. Together, they moved him off the tracks to safety before the next train came along. The injured man is now in stable condition at an area hospital.
After an impressive career in Japan, Yamamoto lost three straight fights in the UFC. His last bout was a submission loss to Vaughan Lee at UFC 144 in February.

Alistair Overeem blames anti-inflammatory medication containing testosterone for elevated T/E ratio, failed test
Hulking heavyweight Alistair Overeem, who lost a shot at the UFC heavyweight title when he failed a March 27 random drug test administered to him by the Nevada Athletic Commission, said in a statement Monday released by his management team that the reason for his failure was medication he was given to treat a rib injury.
Overeem, who had a 14:1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio that was more than twice the legal limit of 6:1 in Nevada, was on Friday pulled from the title fight against champion Junior dos Santos that was to be the main event of UFC 146 on May 26 in Las Vegas by UFC president Dana White and replaced by Frank Mir.

The failure was first announced by the Nevada commission on April 4, noting that Overeem's T/E ratio exceeded 10:1. The next day, it announced that the exact number was 14:1.
Overeem had a hearing scheduled in front of the Nevada commission on Tuesday, but White said Saturday after UFC 145, "I'm not too optimistic" that Overeem would get licensed and that the UFC had marketing deadlines it had to meet. He said the UFC couldn't deal with the uncertainty and ultimately pitted Mir against dos Santos.

In his statement, Overeem said in March he was given an anti-inflammatory medication, which he did not identify, that was mixed with testosterone to treat a rib injury.
His elevated T/E ratio was discovered following a surprise test given by the Nevada commission on March 27 to all six of the heavyweights who were participating in a news conference that day. The others -- dos Santos, Mir, Cain Velasquez, Antonio "Big Foot" Silva and Roy Nelson -- all passed the test.
Prior to the UFC 146 press conference in March, I aggravated an old rib injury on my left side. My doctor prescribed, and I accepted, an anti-inflammatory medication that was mixed with testosterone. I was completely unaware that testosterone was one of the ingredients in the medication. Although I was unaware, I do realize it is my job to know what I am putting into my body.
Overeem has fought under a cloud of suspicion for years, though he had never failed a test previously. He used to fight as a light heavyweight at 205 pounds, but moved to heavyweight and bulked his body up tremendously.
In his statement, Overeem vehemently denied using PEDs and supported the commission. His entire statement:
To my friends and fans,
I am deeply saddened to announce that on Friday, April 20, I respectfully withdrew from the May 26 event so that I can request a continuance until my situation with the Nevada State Athletic Commission is resolved.
I cannot express how sorry I am to the Commission, Junior Dos Santos, the fans, the owners and employees of the UFC, my friends and family and anyone else who this has affected.
I absolutely do not believe in, nor do I use performance-enhancing drugs. I am a clean fighter and I will do whatever it takes to prove this to everyone.
Prior to the UFC 146 press conference in March, I aggravated an old rib injury on my left side. My doctor prescribed, and I accepted, an anti-inflammatory medication that was mixed with testosterone. There is no date set for Overeem's formal hearing. He is facing no punishment because he did not have a license at the time of the test, but he would have to explain the elevated ratios to the athletic commission when he applies for a license after he's ready to fight again. He can choose not to apply for a license in Nevada again, but he almost certainly wouldn't be able to fight in the state unless and until he met the commission face to face and explained himself, even if he does so elsewhere first.

UFC 145 will answer these five questions
While most of the hype around UFC 145 has been around Jon Jones and Rashad Evans, there are 11 other bouts on the card. What questions will they answer? Read on.
Are the young phenoms with similar names the real deal? Michael McDonald and Rory MacDonald are both barely old enough to buy a beer after their fights, but have 28 bouts with just two losses total. McDonald's bout with Miguel Torres will show if he is ready to jump towards contender status, while the last time MacDonald fought with such a bright light on him, he was knocked out with seven seconds left to go by Carlos Condit.

What did the loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira do to Brendan Schaub's mental make-up? If you've been reading Ben Fowlkes' excellent series, "The Hurt Business," you know Schaub is a fighter who needs to train his psyche as much as his takedown defense. The loss to Nogueira would be tough to take for any fighter, as Schaub looked close to a win before Nog came back with the Brazilian crowd roaring behind him. Perhaps the loss steeled Schaub for his next bout. Perhaps it shook him. We'll find out Saturday.
What did being cut do to (or for) Miguel Torres? In December, Miguel Torres was cut from the UFC after making a joke about a rape van. He was welcomed back after doing charity work and making a full apology. In his first fight back, Torres wasn't given an easy bout. Instead, he will have to fight McDonald, the aforementioned phenom. Can Torres show he's still a relevant bantamweight?
Is it possible for Jones/Evans to live up to the hype? This fight has been talked about for more than a year. Even Jones and Evans are sick of talking about each other, about their coaches, about their former friendship, and about what they plan to do to each other. Now that they're so close to actually punching each other in the face, expectations are so lofty that nothing short of a Dan Henderson/Mauricio "Shogun" Rua-esque bout will satisfy. Looking at Evans' last few fights, that's unlikely.

Cormier's path to MMA has been far from easy. After not competing in the Olympics because of a kidney problem after making weight, he stepped away from competition. MMA gave him a place to enjoy competition again. Since his first bout in Sept. of 2009, Cormier has put together an 8-0 record, including a memorable knockout of Antonio Silva.

Zach "Funsize" Makovsky, who has a top-five nickname, will put his belt on the line against Eduardo Dantas at Bellator in Atlantic City tonight. Tournaments will also roll on. In the bantamweight tourney, Marcos Galvao will face Ed West and Luis Nogueira will take on Olympic wrestler Alexis Vila. Mike Corey will fight Daniel Straus for the right to face Marlon Sandro in the featherweight tournament final.
On "The Ultimate Fighter," Team Cruz and Team Faber are even with two wins a piece. Chris Tickle (from Team Cruz) and Joe Proctor (from Team Faber) will fight to give one of their teams an edge.
On HDNet, XFC 17 will feature Corey Hill, the TUF alum who suffered one of the ugliest leg injuries in UFC history, American Top Team standout Luciano dos Santos and Felice Herrig, an up-and-comer on the women's circuit.

Eduardo Dantas and Alexander Gustafsson were the best of the weekend’s warriors
Eduardo Dantas leads off this week's edition of Weekend Warriors, your Monday morning look at the weekend's MMA. "Dudu" was the star of Bellator's show on Friday, choking Zach Makovsky unconscious in the second round of their title bout. With that win, Dantas became the new Bellator bantamweight champ and one of the hottest lighter weight prospects in MMA.
Marcos Galvao and Luis Nogueira both won their bantamweight semifinal tournament matches with unanimous decisions as they vie for the chance to face off with Dantas. In the featherweight tournament, an emotional Daniel Straus pummeled Mike Corey on the way to a unanimous decision win to earn a spot in the tourney final. Straus' training partner was killed in a car accident just a week ago. Staus will face Marlon Sandro for the featherweight tournament championship on May 11.
Gustafsson impresses in Sweden at UFC on Fuel 2
Alexander Gustafsson cemented his role as a top contender in the light heavyweight division with a convincing decision over Thiago Silva on Saturday. Brian Stann got back to his winning ways with a gentlemanly knockout of Alessio Sakara, and Dennis Siver got his first win at featherweight with a decision over Diego Nunes.
In his UFC debut Siyar Bahadurzada took home a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus for his 42-second KO of Paulo Thiago. John Maguire earned a Submission of the Night bonus for his armbar of Damarques Johnson. Brad Pickett and Damacio Page were given Fight of the Night honors for the back-and-forth battle that ended with Pickett finishing Page with a second-round rear naked choke.
Team Faber gets the edge
On "The Ultimate Fighter," Joe Proctor, a protege of UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon, helped Urijah Faber's team take the lead. Proctor took out Chris Tickle with a first-round rear naked choke. John Cofer from Team Faber will face Team Cruz's Vinc Pichel.

Everyone made weight at the UFC on Fuel 2 weigh-ins at the Ericsson Arena in Stockholm. Dennis Siver needed a second chance to make it, and preliminary card fighters Yoislandy Izquierdo and Reza Madadi's staredown involved a lot of snarling.

Strikeforce middleweight contender is waiting on a date, time, and place for his expected fight with champion Luke Rockhold. While he has the time, he's working on his acting chops.
