All fighters make weight and Octagon Girls Logan Stanton and Rachelle Leah return at UFC 149 weigh-ins

All of the fighters from UFC 149 made weight for Saturday night's card in Calgary. It was a low-key weigh-in. The biggest news of the day was that two Octagon Girls who haven't worn the UFC bikini in years were on-duty. Rachelle Leah, who moved onto to other UFC hosting duties, and Logan Stanton, who hasn't worked for the UFC since December of 2009, were both onstage for the weigh-ins.

Complete weights for the event, courtesy of MMA Fighting, are below:

Main Card
Urijah Faber (135) vs. Renan Barao (135)
Hector Lombard (185.5) vs. Tim Boetsch (186)
Cheick Kongo (231) vs. Shawn Jordan (250)
Brian Ebersole (171) vs. James Head (170)
Chris Clements (170) vs. Matt Riddle (170.8)

Preliminary Card
Court McGee (185.5) vs. Nick Ring (185)
Roland Delorme (135) vs. Francisco Rivera (136)
Ryan Jimmo (205) vs. Anthony Perosh (205.5)
Bryan Caraway (135.5) vs. Mitch Gagnon (135)
Antonio Carvalho (145) vs. Daniel Pineda (145)
Mitch Clarke (155) vs. Anton Kuivanen (156)

Next coaches for ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ announced

With both the American and British/Australian editions of "The Ultimate Fighter" airing soon, the UFC announced the coaches, and eventual fight pairings, for "The Ultimate Fighter 16" and "The Ultimate Fighter: Smashes."

USA Today reports Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin will coach the show in the U.S., and face off at the show's finale.

"This is going to be a very interesting dynamic between these two heavyweights," UFC president Dana White said. "They both have huge punching power and great chins, but outside of the octagon, they couldn't be any more different."

TUF 16 will air on FX starting in September, and the live finale will be in December. The UFC is returning to a taped season after the 15th season, which showed live fights, failed to give the long-running reality show a much-needed shot in the arm.

Meanwhile, on the new edition of the show, Ross Pearson will coach Team U.K. and George Sotiropoulos the Aussies. The show, named "Smashes" after a cricket rivalry, will air on FX in Australia.

Will you the coaches make you want to tune in? Tell us in the comments, Facebook or Twitter.

Three stars from full week of MMA: Chris Weidman, Nate Marquardt and Jason High

With UFC on Fuel 4 and Strikeforce: Kennedy vs. Rockhold in one week, the MMA world had plenty of great performances to choose from. Who rose above the rest to be a star? Here are Cagewriter's choices. Tell us yours in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

No. 1 star -- Chris Weidman: With title-shot implications hanging over his bout with Mark Munoz, Weidman wanted to make a statement. He made a clear one with a second-round elbow that knocked Munoz out.

No. 2 star -- Nate Marquardt: A year ago, he was unemployed after out-of-whack testosterone levels forced him out of a UFC bout. Now, he's the Strikeforce welterweight champion due to a memorable fourth-round knockout of Tyron Woodley. Today, you spell redemption N-A-T-E.

No. 3 star -- Jason High: Strikeforce showed almost every fight from Saturday night's card. Every fight, except High's 26-second submission of Nate Moore by guillotine. It wouldn't have taken much to squeeze in a minute of fighting, but they didn't. Instead, check out the play-by-play from MMA Junkie to find out what happened:

After High landed a pair of leg kicks, Moore opted to shoot for a takedown. But when he did, High took quick advantage and latched onto Moore's neck with a guillotine. Seconds later, that was all she wrote — Moore was forced to tap.

It was High's seventh win in a row.

A Long Day’s Journey Into Fight – Part 1

The day begins early.  The weigh-ins for Anthony Pipola's fight are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. sharp, and to get to there — Philadelphia — from here — New York City — in time means at least two hours of navigating rush hour traffic and toll roads.  So we meet at Anthony's coach's place in Queens at 7:00 a.m. and set out, Anthony in the driver's seat and Steve Koepfer, Tyga Maclin and myself along for the ride.  It's Friday.  Ten or so hours after the weigh-ins are the fights — Matrix Fights, actually, a regional MMA organization maybe one rung below the events you'd see on FOX, Showtime or pay-per-view.  And while the main event features a Bellator veteran and the co-main has a female Strikeforce veteran, somewhere tucked away on the undercard is Anthony's bout.  Anthony is an amateur fighter.  This will be only his second fight.

Nearly every weekend, regardless of whether there's a UFC or Strikeforce or Bellator on television, there's a regional show happening somewhere in the United States.  For Philadelphia there's Matrix Fights, but take a drive down the Atlantic City Expressway and you could catch a Ring of Combat or Cage Fury Fighting Championship, and if you were in California or Florida, it could be a King of the Cage or Art of Fighting.  The common denominator for them all is that each has local fighters, either amateur or pro, on their way up or on their way down, aspiring or expiring.

Koepfer, a.k.a. "Sambo Steve", runs the school that Anthony trains out of, where Anthony has trained for about a year and a half.  There are others at the school, everyone from weekend warriors to pro fighters, and the weekly team gathering and the sparring it entails has been known to attract a cross-section of former Bellator champs, accomplished amateurs and rising stars.  Tyga, who wrestled at Hunter College, is the school's wrestling coach.  Many amateur fighters have family and friends who come out to see them compete, but the distance between Anthony's neighborhood in Queens and the City of Brotherly Love has made that impossible, so Sambo Steve and Tyga are all he's got.  I'm just here to observe, to see things from the perspective of a fighter.

Snapshot of Anthony: he's not tall, but his broadness offsets his height, giving him the presence of someone strong and physical.  He's a construction worker of sorts, his fulltime job involving working with ConEd to dig up cracked gas mains and repair them, and when he talks of his family — he's got a wife and three kids — he beams.  His facial hair leans more towards "why bother shaving with a fight coming up?" than fashion statement.  He didn't sleep much the night before, the accumulating anxiousness making slumber impossible, and that edge of exhaustion and nerves and weight cutting (Anthony is supposed to be 175 pounds; he was 172 when he last checked) is something that lurks close to the surface.  Every once in while he unwraps a Jolly Rancher candy and pops it into his mouth.

"How you feeling?" I ask him after introducing myself from the backseat.

"Good," he says from behind the wheel of his SUV.

"Why'd you take a fight in Philly?" I ask.

"Because they offered it," he says.

For his first fight, which took place in May, Anthony and Sambo Steve drove seven hours to a suburb of Buffalo for a show called TNT Fights.  Under current law, professional MMA competition is illegal in New York State, but the athletic commission has eased up on amateur mixed martial arts, and TNT Fights was New York's first sanctioned amateur MMA event in over a decade.  Unfortunately, other than competing in local underground shows, if Anthony wants to fight it's easier for him to travel to New Jersey and Pennsylvania — neither of which require as much driving.

"Wouldn't you rather be fighting in New York?" I ask.

"[Expletive] yeah," he says.  "I'd rather fight in New York.  I'd rather fight on Queens Boulevard.  I work overnight.  [Expletive] this driving to Philly crap."

But we drive.  And drive.  Tyga, whose day job is at one of the Apple Stores in Manhattan, takes a conference call in the backseat.  Sambo Steve plays old television theme songs on his phone, leaving us to guess which shows they're from.  Anthony talks of Japanese MMA — apparently passion of his.  The mood never once strays from being light.  No one knows anything about the man Anthony is supposed to fight other than that he's from New Jersey and his name is Michael Roberts, and yet the lack of information doesn't seem to bother them.  Then it's 9:30, and we're stuck in traffic on the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.  We're late.

Thankfully, when we get to the venue a half hour later, the weigh-ins are still underway.  Unlike other commissions, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission allows for pro/am cards — fight cards that feature a mix of professional MMA bouts and amateur ones.  The pros slated for tonight's Matrix Fights weighed in the night before.  The amateurs get to do their thing the day of, without fanfare, the commission official telling them to complete some paperwork and step on the scale and that's it.

The venue is a union hall not too far from the heart of the city.  The floor is carpeted, and rows of folding chairs surround the cage that's set up in the middle of a room that could fit somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 spectators.  While Anthony weighs in and fills out forms, Sambo Steve and Tyga mingle with other coaches.  A few feet away, one of the female fighters on the card is handed a store-bought pregnancy test to take (standard operating procedure for fighters of the fairer sex).  Some mill about nervously.  Others stare off into space and nod their heads to the music blaring in their headphones.

One hundred seventy-two pounds is Anthony's official weight.   Andria the matchmaker tells us to come back at 6:00 p.m.  The doors are scheduled to open to the public at 7:00 p.m., and first fight is scheduled for 8:00.  It's only 10:30 a.m. now.

The first order business is to get Anthony some food, so we find him a place that serves breakfast, and eggs, pancakes, oatmeal and freshly-squeezed orange juice are scarfed down.

The chatter is constant, the talk hovering around Anthony's opponent (no one is completely sure who he was at the weigh-ins — was he that tall, muscle-bound dude?  Was he the dark-skinned kid with the boxing coach?  Was he even there?).   It's a funny thing being a fighter's coach on the day of their fight, something akin to having a wife in the beginning stages of child birth.  All the preparation — whether they're Lamaze breathing techniques or transitions into submissions — culminates into that one acute moment where the only thing that matters is the thing you're there for, and regardless of whether if it's happening in a delivery room or cage, the focus and singularity of purpose and words of encouragement in the ear are virtually interchangeable.  "You're ready for this," says Sambo Steve, and "Just concentrate on what we worked on," says Tyga, and it's not impossible to imagine those words said to Anthony being said to a woman in the throes of labor.

After our meal we leave Anthony at his car, the idea being that he will nap and rest up.  But that's folly, rest never comes.  Anthony's going to be stepping into the cage in a few hours and stand before someone who wants nothing more than to punch his face in — how can he sleep?

For lack of nothing better to do, Sambo Steve, Tyga and I are at the movies, and it's there that Anthony finds us killing time.  We watch some art house flick, some tear-jerker that is the farthest thing from violent and motivating and the kind of film that someone with a fight in a few hours would ever want to watch.  Afterwards, we drive over to the venue and sit in the car in the parking lot.

The light mood from hours before has transformed into a tense silence.  Battle is impending.

(End of Part 1.  Tune in tomorrow for Part 2, because, you know, fighting and stuff.)

Nick Diaz, Anderson Silva, Travis Browne and Invicta FC: The Morning News Roundup – 7.27.12

Howdy. I'm Jim Genia. You might recognize me from such great literary works as "I, Armbar" and "Tito Ortiz's Head: Friend or Foe?" While Maggie Hendricks is covering some sort of athletic event called the "Olympics", I'll be filling in here at Cagewriter.  Yes, it's a temp job, but please think of me as that really cool substitute teacher you had in high school, the one who said nothing when you disrupted class and set fire to the lab, yet did not hesitate to plant drugs in your locker and call the police.  Heh.  Anyway, here's some news to start your day:

  • Cesar Gracie, coach to the ultra-talented UFC top welterweight contender Nick Diaz, tweeted that there will be an announcement on Graciefighter regarding Diaz's career today at 4:00 p.m. (PST).  If you'll recall, Nick Diaz... yeesh.  The big question mark these past few months has been whether Diaz has truly retired or if he'll get in the cage once more.  Therefore, we can expect Gracie's announcement to be one of the following: "Nick Diaz is not going to fight again", "Nick Diaz is going to fight again", and "Can someone tell Nick Diaz to call home?  No one's heard from him in a while and everyone's pretty worried about him."  Stay tuned!

  • According to ESPN, UFC middleweight champ and untouchable superstar Anderson Silva wants to fight UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre next.

Of much more interest to Silva are the blockbuster fights that can earn him big money as he nears the end of his career. St-Pierre v Silva undoubtedly would make the biggest Pay-Per-View in UFC history, but while Guimaraes says Silva wants the fight, he admits it has not been offered.

Of course Silva would like St. Pierre in a big-money superfight next.  Who would you rather fight?  A welterweight champ whose knee could explode at any time, or UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who sports an eleven-foot reach and has murdered everyone put in front of him?  Silva is no dummy.

  • Just yesterday Travis Browne was sad.  Ben Rothwell, who was to be his opponent at next week's UFC on FOX 4, fell prey to the injury bug, and Browne was without a dance partner.  He was subsequently booted from the card.  But it's a new day, and with this new day comes the news (courtesy of the good folks at MMAJunkie) that Browne will now headline UFC on FX 5 in October, facing off against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.  Hooray!  If you'll recall, Browne is big and dangerous and beats people silly - and being big and dangerous and beating people silly is good for main events.

  • There may be no offerings from the UFC, Strikeforce or Bellator this weekend, but that doesn't mean there isn't a way to get your MMA fix.  Invicta Fighting Championships, the all-female MMA promotion, will be having their second installment in Kansas City, KS, and the event will be broadcast for free on their website.  Here's a video promo courtesy of MMAFighting.  There are some extremely skilled and capable female MMA fighters out there, and a bunch of them are on Saturday night's card.

That's all for now.  Now excuse me while I go plant drugs in your locker.

Frank Mir, the Strikeforce Crossover, and Who Should Be Next

Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir has done us all a great service by agreeing to meet Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand-Prix winner Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce cage this fall.  After all, the other opponents rumored to have been under consideration — Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett (again), KJ Noons sitting on Ryan Couture's shoulders — weren't really options at all, and who else is there on the Strikeforce roster to challenge Cormier?  The answer is no one, and with Mir shucking the bonds of the UFC for a one-time-only crossover bout, we get to have a match-up that's compelling on paper and will likely be very fun to watch.

However, the move doesn't address the other glaring holes that need to be filled in the roster of the House That Scott Coker Built.  Strikeforce lightweight champ Gilbert Melendez has beaten everyone that matters in his division, middleweight champ Luke Rockhold is without a worthy foe, and gosh darn it, you can only spread Keith Jardine so thin.  So who else should the UFC send over to fill Strikeforce's ranks?  Sure, the dough and exposure is nowhere near as great compared to what you get for fighting in the Octagon, but look at Nate Marquardt.  The ex-UFC welterweight waltzed in, put up a heck of a fight against Tyron Woodley, and is now the owner of a shiny new belt.  For the fighters, there is certainly value in crossing over.  Here, then, is a list of fighters on the UFC roster who could be prime candidates for taking the Strikeforce fieldtrip.  It is by no means complete — please, feel free to add to them in the comments.  And if you disagree with my suggestions… picture me sad.  So very sad.

  • Evan Dunham — At one time, the word on the street was that the brass wanted B.J. Penn to take on Melendez in Strikeforce.  But Penn is too much of a viable pay-per-view commodity, and it would've been senseless to waste him on the subscription-based channel Showtime.  Evan Dunham, though, is another story entirely.  The jiu-jitsu specialist had a pretty good win streak going before he was outpointed by Sean Sherk at UFC 119 and smashed by Melvin Guillard at UFC: Fight for the Troops 2, and his well-rounded skills could conceivably give Melendez fits no matter where the fight goes.

  • Clay Guida — Fast, frenetic, and fun when he wants to be (i.e., when he's not running away for five rounds), Clay Guida could definitely make Melendez miserable in the cage.  Besides, what's left for him in the UFC?  It would take Ben Henderson, Frankie Edgar, Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz all slipping on banana peels and breaking their legs before Guida could come close to tasting championship glory.

  • Gray Maynard — As a former "wrestling man-blanket" turned "dangerous slugger", Gray Maynard could stuff Melendez's takedowns, squash his jiu-jitsu, and hit "El Nino" so hard his pet parrot dies.  Also, what else is the UFC going to do with Maynard?  If Edgar reclaims the lightweight championship from Henderson, watching Maynard and Edgar go at it once more is about as palatable as a plate of dirt.

  • Thiago Alves — Once upon a time, Thiago Alves was in contention for the UFC welterweight title.  Those days are gone now, but that doesn't mean that Alves isn't skilled and dangerous enough to make waves among Strikeforce's welterweights.  Maybe, maybe Woodley could hold Alves down for three rounds.  Maybe not, though, and Alves is just capable enough to beat him and beat Marquardt and take the belt.

  • Jon Fitch — UFC welterweight king Georges St. Pierre mauled him, Johny Hendricks KO'd him, and he drew with Penn.  However, other than that, Jon Fitch's run in the Octagon has been flawless.  Boring, but flawless.  Do you think Marquardt can prevent Fitch from hugging him to death?  I don't.  And I'd wager that once Fitch stepped into the cage to face Woodley, the two would stare at each other for a full fifteen minutes, unsure of what to do.

  • Chris Leben — UFC middleweight stud Chris Leben is good for about two or three fights a year before his annual steroid suspension forces him to sit on the sidelines, so why not let him do those bouts in Strikeforce?  In terms of skill set, he's got enough grappling to keep Rockhold from really hurting him.  As for his striking… yeah, no way could Rockhold eat one of those concrete fists and survive.

  • Vladimir Matyushenko — Look, it's not like any of the Strikeforce light-heavyweights can hold onto the belt for any length of time, but it's boring watching the same three guys fight for it over and over again.  Put Vladimir Matyushenko in there against Mike Kyle, Gegard Mousasi and Rafael Cavalcante and let's see where it goes.

Jim Genia gets his tweet on here.  Giddyup.

Urijah Faber’s rib was broken early in loss to Renan Barao (PHOTO)

Urijah Faber lost in his second shot at a UFC title at UFC 149 in Calgary on Saturday night, and walked away with the extra bonus of a broken rib. He said a knee from Renan Barao broke it in the first round, and tweeted his X-ray.

Faber has experience with gutting his way through a fight with an injury. He injured both his hands early in a loss to Mike Brown in 2009, and finished the five-round fight.

Though the bout wasn't a thriller, it was hardly worth the boos the crowd sent Faber and Barao's way. After the not great bout between James Head and Brian Ebersole, the boring bout between Cheick Kongo and Shawn Jordan, and the bizarre snooze fest between Tim Boetsch and Hector Lombard, only a fight stoppage would do.

They must have forgotten Faber is hard to finish. He can ignore injuries, and hasn't lost by a stoppage since he was TKOed by Brown in November of 2008.

Matthew Riddle posts submission win with pregnant wife on his mind

With family matters on his mind, Matthew Riddle earned a win at UFC 149 with an arm triangle choke of Chris Clements.

After a bruising two and a half rounds, Clements tried a spinning back fist. Riddle grabbed Clements' arm, and maneuvered him into an arm triangle while the pair was still standing. They fell to the ground, but Riddle held on. Clements tapped at 2:02 in the third round, giving Riddle the win.

After telling UFC commentator Joe Rogan he loved him, Riddle turned his focus to his wife and kids.

"I wanna say I love my wife Lisa. We have a kid on the way, and we already have twins. I love you all," Riddle said after his win.

[Related: Ronda Rousey calls out Michael Phelps for behavior in Beijing]

Riddle's devotion went beyond mentioning his wife to the crowd in Calgary and the pay-per-view audience. Instead of flying from Texas to Calgary for the fights, Dave Farra reports Riddle drove 20 hours because he wanted her at the fights with him. Pregnant women are often advised not to fly during certain parts of their pregnancies, so he made the sacrifice so she could be there to support him.

Riddle won a $65,000 Submission of the Night bonus, which should help with the baby on the way.

Luke Rockhold to Throw Out First Pitch at Oakland A’s Game

You know you've made it as an athlete when a Major League Baseball team asks you to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at one of their games.  Such is the case with Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold.  Two weeks ago, Rockhold was handling challenger Tim Kennedy in the cage; on Monday, he gets to drop by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and put one across home plate (the A's are playing the Tampa Bay Rays, if that means anything to you).  Of course, this isn't the first time that an MMA fighter has been granted this honor.  Other examples include:

  • UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones, who threw out the first pitch for a San Diego Padres game back in July, 2010.

  • Former UFC light-heavyweight champ Rashad Evans, who tossed one out for a Miami Marlins game in June of this year.

  • Former UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin, who did the honors for a Cincinnati Reds game.

  • Former UFC welterweight star Chris Lytle, who threw one home for a Los Angeles Dodgers game.

  • Former WEC bantamweight champ Miguel Torres, who did one up for the Chicago White Sox.

  • Strikeforce fighter K.J. Noons, who rocketed one home for a Houston Astros game.

  • UFC light-heavyweight fighter Brandon Vera, who did the same for a Padres game earlier this month.

You know what.  Now that I think about it, this whole throwing-out-the-ceremonial-first-pitch thing isn't that special after all.  As you were.

Before he defends his belt, some Luke Rockhold highlights to start your day

Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold will get a second chance to defend his belt in Portland on Saturday night. Before you tune into the fights on Showtime, here's a handy dandy reminder of Rockhold's capabilities.

He's undefeated in Strikeforce and 9-1 overall. Only one of Rockhold's fights have gone to the judges; the rest were first-round stoppages. Will Rockhold keep a hold of his belt on Saturday night, or will Tim Kennedy walk away the champion? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Nick Diaz Update: Will Return, Wants Anderson Silva

Like a passing case of the munchies, UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz's plans to retire seem to have faded, and taking the place of that retirement is a burning desire to face UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.  All this is according to his longtime coach, Cesar Gracie, who posted a lengthy statement on the matter over at GracieFighter.

It was only just February when Diaz purportedly turned his back on the sport, a move prompted by his controversial unanimous decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143.  The defeat came after a five-round scrap for the UFC Interim Welterweight Championship title, and the bout saw Condit playing "hit and run" while the Stockton native followed him around and hurled insults.  Soon after, it was revealed that Diaz had tested positive for marijuana metabolites in a post-fight urinalysis, and the subsequent year-long suspension levied upon him appeared to be the icing on the retirement cake.

Said Gracie:

For the last couple months I've watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more.  He's training harder now than he has for many of his fights.  It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA.  It is who he is.

This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back in the cage.  Nick Diaz will return.

With interim champ Condit destined to face UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 154 in November, who is there for Diaz - an elite, top-level fighter - to face that's worthwhile?

As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights "that matter".  Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere.  He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge.

Silva's camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catchweight.  Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.

And there you have it.  Unfortunately, unless Diaz (or, more aptly, his attorneys) can figure out a way around his suspension, ain't nothin' going down 'till February, 2013.  Remember kids, dope is for dopes.  Don't be a dope!

Jim Genia tweets here and wrote this book.  Come at me, bro.

Nate Marquardt, Luke Rockhold big winners at Strikeforce

Strikeforce crowned a new champion and held onto another during Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Kennedy on Saturday night in Portland.

Former UFC contender Nate Marquardt won the vacant Strikeforce welterweight championship with a knockout of Tyron Woodley. Marquardt controlled the stand-up for the first two rounds and held off Woodley's takedown attempts.

In the third round, Woodley knocked Marquardt down, but couldn't finish him immediately. While Woodley was still working on the ground, the referee stood them up. Marquardt made his move in the fourth, hitting Woodley with three upper cuts that knocked Woodley out for the first time in his career.

Luke Rockhold held onto the Strikeforce middleweight belt with a grinding, five-round decision. Rockhold held off Kennedy's submission attempts and avoided being takedown. He also landed more strikes. According to CompuStrike, Rockhold landed 34 power strikes while Kennedy only landed 16.

The judges saw it 49-46 on all three cards for Rockhold, moving his record to 10-1.

Strikeforce’s Lorenz Larkin drops to knees and begs for bonuses after win

After winning a decision over Robbie Lawler at Strikeforce: Kennedy vs. Rockhold on Saturday night, Lorenz Larkin asked UFC president Dana White for a favor. During the postfight interview, Larkin got down on his knees and asked commentator Mauro Ranallo to join him there. Larkin then begged for equality among fighters, and asked that Strikeforce fighters receive fight night bonuses, like their UFC counterparts.

"We're your family, too," Larkin said.

Five and six-figure fight night bonuses are a norm for UFC fights. Bonuses are given out for the best submission, knockout and fight from each event. The extra money can turn out to be a financial boon for fighters. UFC heavyweight Pat Barry was six days from eviction and surviving on ketchup packets and rice when two bonuses for one fight came in.

[Also: Nate Marquardt KOs Tyron Woodley for Strikeforce welterweight title]

Though Strikeforce is also owned by Zuffa, the company which owns the UFC, the two groups are operated differently. Several UFC events are held every quarter, giving UFC fighters two or three fights a year. Strikeforce fighters are often waiting for months and months for their bouts.

Tim Kennedy, one of Saturday night's main eventers, waited a year for his bout, despite having no injuries holding him out of competition. Considering fighters only receive purses when they fight, how often they fight affects how much money they make.

Strikeforce fighter Tarec Saffiedine tweeted his support of Larkin, saying, "Ooooohhh yeaahh BONUSES! Thx u lorenz!"

UFC champion Georges St-Pierre once famously dropped to his knees in the cage to beg for a title shot. Larkin used the same ploy while pointing out it's not even about getting his own bonus, but it is about all fighters being treated fairly. It's sad that he even has to go to such lengths.

Rutted Corners

There are two obstacles you will always have to face on the track: ruts and corners.  Combine the two and traversing themcan be frustrating.  The power and torque that modern four strokes produce is pretty incredible and lines get dug out quickly.  Corners are the backbone of speed which makes it essential to be extremely [...]
