Randy Couture showed some guts taking on a scary fighter in his final MMA tilt. It didn't work out for the 47-year-old legend, but he got to walk out of the Octagon to a huge ovation from the crowd in Toronto and with his head held high. There may never be another fighter like Couture.
Couture took on MMA's great riddle in karate master Lyoto Machida. For six minutes, Machida confused Couture with his movement and counter-striking, then he pulled off an amazing front kick to put the former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion on his back. Couture was out and referee Yves Lavigne jumped on top to save him at 1:05 of the second at UFC 129.
Machida essentially pulled off the crane kick from "The Karate Kid" and, in doing so, knocked out one of Couture's teeth.
"I think I had all my teeth the last time we had this discussion," joked Couture with UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I felt like I was standing still out there. He's a tremendous athlete."
Couture (19-11, 16-8 UFC) confirmed that he is done. He's made a pretty successful transition to acting. He was a cast member in Sylvester Stallone's blockbuster "The Expendables" and is part of the mix when "The Expendables 2" begins filming in September.
His impact on mixed martial arts is beyond description. After a decorated amateur wrestling career, he decided to transition to MMA when it was still very much an outlaw sport back in 1997. He was 34 at the time. During the growth years, Couture was a winner in and out of the Octagon. Along with winning five titles fights at light heavyweight and heavyweight, he did much of the media work necessary to spread the word about the legitimacy of the sport after it was purchased by Zuffa in 2001.
Machida, nearly overcome by emotion, thanked Couture for the opportunity to fight him.
"It was an honor [to fight him]. It was a dream when I was a child, I would like to fight this guy," Machida said. "He is a hero. This is the hero. Thank you so much."
Machida's amazing boot was the second front-kick knockout in the history of the UFC. The first came less than three months ago at UFC 126 when Machida's teammate Anderson Silva used a similar move to knock out Vitor Belfort.
Machida's kick was a variation of what Silva did. He faked a left kick and leapt into a right kick. Couture never saw it coming. After the fight, Machida thanked both his father and Steven Seagal for teaching him the kick. Silva also thanked the movie star following his fight. Seagal, an 80's and 90's action film star, has been working with some of the fighters from Blackhouse MMA based in Southern California. Many in and out of the game mocked on Seagal for accepting credit following Silva's win, maybe the kidding needs to subside.

On skates, Donald Brashear could always fight with the best of them.
Can he do it bare-footed and against trained professional fighters? Brashear wants to find out.
According to the Canadian Press, the former NHL henchman, who's still playing hockey in the minors, has signed a deal with Ringside MMA to fight in June in Quebec City.
"Despite Brashear's lack of experience in MMA, he's a very athletic guy, he's in good shape, he's gutsy, he's learning pretty fast and showed an early interest and motivation," a Ringside MMA spokeswoman said. "Plus, he's no stranger to fighting."
Keep in mind, Brashear is also 39 years old. The 6-foot-3, 237-pounder will have to get approval from local authories before he steps into the cage.
Brashear may want to look at MMA sparring videos with another former NHL player George Laraque. Sure he was facing one of the best in the world, but Laraque was schooled a few months ago by Georges St-Pierre.
We're guessing the biggest test for Brashear will be conditioning and avoiding the potential adrenaline dump that happens in fighting. Baltimore Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski, who's crossed over to professional boxing, said fighting is unlike any conventional sport.
"You have to control it in boxing, because in football maybe that first series you get real excited. The warm up in boxing is far, far more important than in football," Zbikowski told ESPN1100 in Las Vegas.
During his 17-year career, Brashear piled up 2,634 penalty minutes in 1,025 NHL games.

The media isn't moving fast enough for the UFC, so the promotion has decided to move forward with its own prefight and postfight shows. The sport is badly in need of consistent shows before and after the fights. Various websites and even ESPN has dipped their toe into prefight/postfight field, now the UFC is introducing UFC Central at UFC 129.
According to MMAjunkie, the show will be hosted by former WEC voice Todd Harris along with CBS Sports' anchor Molly Qerim. UFC fighters Stephan Bonnar and Kenny Florian will serve as analysts.
The UFC adds that during the PPV event UFC Central gives extra access to the viewer:
Once the UFC 129 live broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, UFC Central will only be available to fans that purchased the event for viewing on UFC.TV and will capture interviews with fighters on the fight card during the live broadcast as well as other analyst commentary.
UFC Central will be offered as a seventh video feed and fifth audio feed, leveraging UFC.TV's multi-camera view and multi-audio feed experience. During the live event, fans will have the option inside of UFC.TV to select UFC Central as the main broadcast; or, drag and drop it into Picture-n-Picture or Quad View so that UFC Central can be watched and/or listened to alongside the broadcast of the main fight card.
Immediately following the live broadcast, UFC Central will be offered for free at UFC.TV with post-fight analysis, making it the ultimate destination for the most comprehensive UFC 129 news.
The show on UFC.tv airs at 8 p.m. ET. MMAConvert points out that it's an interesting time slot because it counterprograms the UFC 129 undercard fights on Spike TV at 8.
One would assume this is the beginning of plenty of programming on "UFC Central." UFC president Dana White has always been bullish on the Internet.
"It is (the future), I'm telling you," White told MMAjunkie.com. "I've been saying it for 10 years. Everything is going Internet. I believe that everybody is going to be watching TV and be on the Internet."
The promotion is showing the first five undercard fights on its Facebook page beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

If the weigh-in is an accurate gauge of how fired up Canada is for UFC 129, tomorrow night at the Rogers Centre is going to be ridiculous.
A crowd of well over 5,000 jammed the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, to watch the 24 fighters weigh-in. Only Ben Henderson had difficulty, missing the lightweight limit of 155 pounds.
Main event fighters Georges St. Pierre (169.5) and Jake Shields (169) were on the money and then cordial during quick conversations with UFC analyst Joe Rogan. Shields was greeted with loud booing as he walked out, on the scale and on the microphone.
"I'm bringing the belt home with me. People can boo all they want, but it's me and Georges in the cage," Shields said. "It's gonna be an all-out war, one I'm going to make you remember."
The amazing Randy Couture came in well under 205 pounds at light heavyweight. The 47-year-old was 203.5 pounds and even looked confident despite having martial arts legend Steven Seagal staring over his shoulder. Seagal, the action film star, accompanied Lyoto Machida to the stage.
In the buff, with a towel draped in front of him, Henderson tried two times to reach 156 pounds. Ontario officials then asked for the booming music to be turned down. The official working the scale said the music was making the instrument vibrate and move. Henderson stood on the scale one final time and hit 156.5 once again. He'll have an hour to lose that half-pound. He meets Canadian Mark Bocek on the pay-per-view portion of the card.

Canadians are faithful and creative MMA fans. A few thousand attended a Dana White Q & A yesterday at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. They've learned from experience that if you ask Dana White for something, he may actually give it to you.
Multiple fans asked for a chance to go backstage during the weigh-in. It appeared that 28 of them got back there.
Another fan asked if he could sit next to the Octagon girls during UFC 129 - wish granted. And the most bold fan asked if he could come into the cage following the main event. He told White that he's great at eveything except putting the championship belt on, so the fan asked if he could put the belt on Georges St-Pierre after he beats "James" Shields. Clearly, he's a baseball fan. Jake is the fighter challenging GSP, James is a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays. White thought for a second and said yes. He confirmed it later in a short conversation with Joe Rogan (3:25 mark).
White and the crew give us a quick look at Rogers Centre with its configuration for the 55,000 tonight. A reporter, sitting in an SUV with White and owner Lorenzo Fertitta in the bowels of Rogers Centre, was scared to death when the sound in the arena was cranked up. White said it shook the car.
White also jokes while walking around the arena that he hopes no one presses "the button" to open the Rogers Centre roof. The stadium that used to be known as Skydome has a retractable roof. There is a giant four-sided scoreboard with HD screens hanging over the Octagon (8:05 mark)

Randy Couture is ready to call it a career, yet he's up for new challenges and it sounds like that could include future fights.
We tracked down Couture just before he hit the friendly skies for Toronto and UFC 129. He's steadfast in his desire to walk away, win or lose, after his fight against Lyoto Machida, but when we mentioned UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, Couture had an interesting take. Couture said the "UFC would have to make it right" for him to take a fight against Jones (3:00 mark). He also mentioned that he was offered Jones in the past and turned down the fight.
Couture was also reacting to Dana White saying he didn't think the legend was going to retire. White made the comment to Adam Hill of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Reached via text message late Tuesday, UFC president Dana White made it clear he thinks Couture will continue fighting if he beats Machida.
It's likely Couture walks away, works some UFC broadcasts and serves an ambassador for the sport, but it'll be interesting to see what he does if he scores a big upset over Machida. Never say never.

Dana White was clearly blown away by the passion of Canadian MMA fans in Toronto for UFC 129, so when one of them had a crazy request, the UFC president granted the UFC diehard his wish.
Yahoo! Sports' Eh Game was on the scene as Trevor Fitzgerald rolled the dice during White's Friday Q & A:
"After Georges St-Pierre beats down Jake Shields," Fitzgerald started, to immediate cheers. "Can I have the honour of the putting the championship belt around his waist?"
The question seemed to daze White for a moment.
"That's a tough request," the president said. "But [expletive] it, I'll do it."
The place erupted. Disbelieving fans could be heard shouting, "Are you kidding me?" And moments later, Fitzgerald was near the stage sharing his cell number with White's bodyguard so that they can set this whole thing up.
If you paid close attention seconds after Bruce Buffer belted out the results and wondered who the Kevin Smith look-a-like was in the Octagon, now you have your answer - just some fan who asked.
Fitzgerald may be the luckiest man in Canada. He was only at the event because he won a contest!
A father of two from Fort Frances, Ont., Fitzgerald asked his wife if he could go to UFC 129. The answer was no. Corrina, his wife reminded him that his five-year-old daughter Emily had a dance recital today.
Fitzgerald had one card left up his sleeve. He'd entered a UFC 129 trip giveaway at a local Boston Pizza. Guess what happened? Fitzgerald has his name pulled, won two tickets, a hotel room and airfare, and the wifey had to relent.

Before their battle at UFC 129 next week, Georges St-Pierre and Jake Shields have pretty much refused to engage in trash talk. That's because there's an immense amount of respect between the two fighters. GSP went one step further today saying the odds on the fight are ridiculous.
"This is foolish. This is like a trap for me. I'm not going to fall into that trap. The odds are ridiculous," St-Pierre said. "Sometimes I think people don't even know the sport. To know the sport, you have to be into it. Most of the people who make the odds they don't even know the sport very well."
GSP said Shields would beat everyone of his previous opponents and he knew before watching past fights, that the former Strikeforce middleweight champ was going to beat Robbie Lawler and Dan Henderson.
"People forget that a guy who has good submission holds is just as dangerous as a knockout punch. You can be winning the whole fight ... and at the last minute you commit a mistake and bang you have to tap," St-Pierre said (1:15 mark). "Jake Shields has a weapon that's more dangerous than a knockout punch."
St-Pierre knows the general lack of respect for Shields puts a lot of pressure on him to win.
"People who make the odds they don't even acknowledge the true skill set of Jake Shields. And that is something that really pisses me off," St-Pierre said. "I have the pressure of going through Jake Shields like a knife in the butter. They don't understand the danger. People keep asking me about 'what are you going to do next?' It's not what I'm going to do next. What is happening right now is the most dangerous test I ever face in my career."
Here's video GSP on the teleconference. He was having a meal at the time (3:20 mark):
St-Pierre is firing away at the wrong people when he talks about the oddsmakers. The folks who set the numbers are simply looking for two-way action. He needs to call out bettors, fans and "experts" of the sport who don't recognize Shields as a good play at plus-350.
