Jackson takes main event in a decision at UFC 130

In the main event at UFC 130, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson won a unanimous decision over Matt Hamill with a fight that showed off his defensive prowess and drew boos from the crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. After the fight, Jackson said he was fighting with an injured hand.

Jackson stuffed a takedown attempt early in the first round, setting the tone for the rest of the bout. Hamill used snapping leg kicks throughout the first round, as Jackson punished with strikes every time Hamill came in close. In the last 30 seconds of the round, Jackson teed off, pushing Hamill against the cage and landing a bevy of strikes. There wasn't enough time for Jackson to finish, but Hamill was definitely damaged from the late onslaught.

Hamill came out with an immediate head kick in the second, but Jackson easily answered with strikes. Jackson continued to methodically hold off every one of Hamill's attacks, landing knees and short jabs along the way. Hamill seemed frustrated with his lack of ability to take Jackson down or generate any offense. Again, in the last minute of the round, Jackson tagged Hamill with an uppercut and body shots, but again, it was too late.

The third round featured more counterfighting from Jackson, and more frustration from Hamill. Both fighters appeared to be tired as the round wore on, and neither were capable of throwing any big moves.

After the 30-27 on all three judges cards was announced, Jackson said that his hand was injured.

"I came into this fight with a fractured hand, and I apologize. I wasn't able to put on the fight I wanted to," Jackson said. A big smile appeared on his face as UFC commentator Joe Rogan pointed out that Jackson hadn't given up a takedown.

"I didn't get taken down? Good. Matt Hamill is tough."

With a win, Jackson was expected to get a title shot. His counterfighting style was enough to win the fight, but it was hardly an endorsement of what a great fighter Jackson is. Instead of the knockouts that Jackson is capable of delivering, this fight resembled Jackson's win over Keith Jardine, where Jackson won the bout with big flurries at the end.

Hamill was also expected to be in the running for the title shot with a win, but showed that he still isn't at the elite level of the stacked light-heavyweight division. He falls to 10-3, while Jackson's record improves to 32-8.

Seven fights to swoon for in the next six weeks

Starting on Saturday night, the MMA world will give fans six major events in six weeks before it takes a short summer break. Which fights will convince you to stay inside as the summer heats up?

Demetrious Johnson vs. Miguel Torres, UFC 130: I'll admit, I'm less than enthused about UFC 130. After injuries pulled Gray Maynard's championship rematch with Frankie Edgar, the card lost some luster, but I've also found that the cards I wasn't excited about have blown me away. This fight is exactly one of the bouts that will get me to change my mind. Though Torres has shown a more cautious style recently, he'll have to solve the problem of Johnson's wrestling. For Johnson, it's another chance to move up the UFC's bantamweight ladder against the former champion.

Clay Guida vs. Anthony Pettis, "The Ultimate Fighter" Finale: Pettis was promised a UFC title shot after winning the WEC strap, but those plans were put to the side when Maynard and Edgar fought to a draw. Now, he can take out his frustration with waiting on Clay Guida, who is just as eager to make Pettis feel unwelcome in the UFC.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman, UFC 131: Einemo's debut in the UFC is sure to turn heads. He can win on his feet, as a 6-foot-6 fighter who trains with the famed Golden Glory camp in Holland, or on the ground, as he won an ADCC submission wrestling world championship. His MMA career is limited, but it will be fun to see how he can put it all together in the Octagon this June.

Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes, UFC 131: The interesting part of this fight will come at weigh-ins, to see how Florian can handle the cut down to 145 lbs. after fighting at lightweight for years. Once he actually gets to the Octagon, Florian will face a tough test in Nunes, who is on a three-fight winning streak.

Gina Carano vs. Sarah D'Alelio, Strikeforce: The last time we saw Carano fight, she was being beat on by Strikeforce women's champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. She's spent time working on her movie career. How will nearly two years of ring rust affect her?

Pat Barry vs. Cheick Kongo, UFC on Versus 4: One word comes to mind with this match-up: OWWWWW. Both fighters are capable of throwing painful, KO kicks. It will be interesting to see how the two defend each other, and how the massive height difference will come into play.

Dong Hyun Kim vs. Carlos Condit, UFC 132: I wish I had a well-thought-out reason why I'm so excited for this fight, but it's just that these two are capable of knocking people out. Hard. Kim hasn't had a KO win since UFC 84, but Condit has won his last two fights with a knockout and a TKO. I can't imagine this fight will go for three, full rounds.

These are the fights that are fight on my list. Which ones are you excited for? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Johnson pulls mild upset on Torres at UFC 130

LAS VEGAS - Demetrious Johnson continues to clash with bigger fighters in the bantamweight class and take them down with his non-stop approach. The 5-foot-3 Johnson made former WEC champ Miguel Torres his latest victim. Torres found himself on his back too often and lost a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three cards.

Torres (39-4, 1-1 UFC) did a good job of moving and try to pick apart Johnson in the first, but became way too stationary in the final rounds.

Johnson (10-1, 2-0 UFC) scored multiple takedowns in the second and third. Torres worked for submissions, but more often than not MMA judges won't reward fighters for offense from the bottom. And the reality was, Johnson countered every Torres' move and stayed out of real trouble.

"It was a tough fight," Torres said. "He took me down and he just held me. I had a couple of submission attempts that gave me the chance to put him away. This was my fault tonight. He's slippery and he was able to get the takedowns. I just didn't take advantage when I should have."

Johnson said he thought the difference was controlling the pace and pushing forward in spite of what he thought was an injured leg.

"I thought I had a great game plan," Johnson said. "My goal was to kick his front leg, but at one point, he checked my kick and hit a soft spot (on my right leg). It really limited my mobility. My legs are my engine and he took that away from me. Fortunately, I was able to recover and secure good takedowns.

Torres, who raced out to a 37-1 start to his career, has now lost three of five. This was a costly loss for Torres, who was working toward a title shot or slot on a future "Ultimate Fighter" against the winner of the UFC 132's fight between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.

The 24-year-old Johnson has a bright future. Frankly, he should be fighting down at 125 pounds, but the UFC hasn't added the flyweight division yet. So for now, look out bantamweights and expect to go hard for at least 15 minutes against "Mighty Mouse."

UFC helps amateur shows grow: Tuff-N-Uff in bigger arena tonight in Vegas

Memorial Day weekend is jammed with parties and concerts in Las Vegas. UFC 130 is certainly the biggest sporting event in town, but it's not the only MMA going down. One of the best amateur shows in the country has outgrown its old digs and moved to a bigger arena. Tuff-N-Uff takes place tonight at the 3,500 seat Cox Pavilion.

The card is headlined by Frank Mir's cousin Larry Mir, who's facing Chis Barden. Mir realizes the significance of the amateur show moving to a larger venue.

"It is such a huge honor to be able to fight where Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar had their fight [at the first Ultimate Fighter finale]. They speak so much about how that fight put MMA in the mainstream," Mir told the Las Vegas Sun. "It's such a big honor to be able to fight where the greats have fought."

The weigh-ins for the card took place yesterday at the Sky Combat Ace hangar where Randy and Ryan Couture were on hand along with TUF 7 champ Amir Sadollah.

The fight card starts at 7 p.m. PT. Yahoo! Sports lead MMA writer and myself will be on hand doing our ESPNRadio1100 "The MMA Insiders" show from 6-7 p.m. Come by and say hi, or listen here. Tonight's guest include Anthony Pettis and Brendan Schaub.

Ellenberger? No way! It’s Fitch that Story wants next

Rick Story surprised many by beating Thiago Alves in just about every aspect of their bout on Saturday. With a collegiate wrestling background, Story used some grappling to wear and slow down Alves, but where he really scored the victory was on the feet. Alves is a feared striker, but was outlanded 79 to 54.

Following the fight, Story (13-3 , 6-1 UFC) was brimming with confidence. When asked about fighting another rising prospect in the division, Jake Ellenberger, Story was quick to say no. Ellenberger has won four straight. Story, 26, and Ellenberger met outside the UFC in 2008 with Story winning.

"I fought Ellenberger before and I beat him pretty handily. It would be a step back for me just because I dominated him," Story told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "He's going to need a couple of wins to (earn a rematch)."

Story, ranked No. 23 at welterweight by the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings, wants No. 2 Jon Fitch.

"I think I'd match up really well. I believe I have really good takedown defense and really good scrambling skills to be able to keep it on the feet. I think I have the power to put it to him, so stylistically I think it's a great matchup for me," Story said. "Jon Fitch has great control, great wrestling, but I've seen him get clipped before. He's up there and it will get me that title shot quicker."

Story probably won't get Fitch, but looks like he can compete with just about anyone ranked ahead of him. The UFC welterweights in the top 22 include Jake Shields, Josh Koscheck, Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez, Martin Kampmann, Matt Hughes, Anthony Johnson, Mike Pyle, Paulo Thiago, Dong Hyun Kim, Ellenberger, Dan Hardy, John Hathaway and Chris Lytle.

Fitch (23-3, 13-1 UFC) is sidelined after shoulder surgery. He's expected back some time in the fall. His camp did a great video look at Fitch immediately following the surgery. It doesn't look like a very pleasant recovery process.

Senator or fighter? Stann sticks with the Octagon for now

Give Brian Stann credit, the guy doesn't need to be fighting in a cage. At age 30, Stann could pretty much choose any profession and be successful. As we witnessed today during the UFC 130 press conference, he'd be a great politician .

"I've been given an amazing opportunity by the UFC. I really make it a point to enjoy every minute I'm in that Octagon because in the blink of an eye that could be taken from any one of us. How many people get the opportunity to be a professional athlete, have an entire arena screaming at you for moment in time? I mean, we're gods in there for 15 minutes," Stann said. "That's gonna pass us by. I savor the opportunity and I'm just very lucky to be fighting a champion like Jorge [Santiago] on Memorial Day."

Before each fight, Stann's military background (Naval Academy grad and a Marine, who served in Iraq and was awarded the Silver Star in 2006) makes for a tremendous story, or does it?

At the presser today, a media member asked if Stann was tired of talking about his heroic history in the military. Most people might have popped off, but not Stann. He took it in stride.

"It's never easy to talk about because it always feels like I'm bragging about my military history and that's not my intention. I'm sure some of the hardcore fans get sick of hearing about it but I'm not the one asking the questions. I think this being Memorial Day that was obvious this was going to happen. I'm sorry if people are getting sick of hearing about it," said Stann.

Sorry? For what? There's no need for Stann to apologize. There's new viewers and fans, at and around each UFC event. Why not keep telling the story? The work he's doing as the executive director of Hire Heroes is pretty incredible.

When it came time to talk about the fight against Santiago, he paid the Brazilian nothing but respect. In doing so, he actually took a mild shot at his original opponent Wanderlei Silva.

"When you get to legend status like Wanderlei Silva, some fights pique your interest and some fights don't," Stann said. "In all honesty, let's face it, I got a tougher opponent, who's better for my career."

Many fans may argue that point. Silva is still a huge name and win by Stann would've moved him towards a fight with a top five opponent at middleweight. Stann pointed out that Santiago is a champion, who's 11-1 over the last four years. Stann has won two straight and 4-of-5. That loss came at 205 against fast-rising prospect Phil Davis.

A different Pettis kick to blow your mind

The MMA world was set on fire when Anthony Pettis threw his "Showtime Kick" against Ben Henderson at the final World Extreme Cagefighting fight, but he had another amazing kick before the Henderson fight.

At WEC 47, Pettis delivered a knockout kick to Danny Castillo. Pettis came into that fight with one loss, and knew he had deliver to keep his Zuffa career alive. Not only did he deliver, but he started on the road to a WEC championship.

His UFC debut is Saturday against Clay Guida. Will he be able to create magic again, or will Guida's wrestling stifle Pettis? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Hamill’s grandfather a key to his success

Living in the bubble of the MMA world, it's easy to forget how remarkable Matt Hamill is for being a deaf fighter. He's been in the UFC since 2006, so we're used to him overcoming odds, and usually treat him no differently than any other fighter. It turns out that we're not the only ones, as his grandfather did the same.

Those expectations from his grandfather helped propel Hamill to become an elite fighter, and led him to the main event of Saturday's UFC 130 against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

‘Rampage’ Jackson doesn’t need to fight anymore, he’s the official BS detector

Some have questioned Quinton Jackson's level of desire to fight Matt Hamill this weekend. Now we know what's been clouding his mind. In this hilarious Boost Mobile commercial, "Rampage" is serving as official bull[expletive] detector.

Watch him go after a banker, a weatherman and a Cris Angel look-a-like.

Rampage got everyone worked up with a recent quote about the Hamill fight.

"If they get to know me, I'm not really excited about anybody I fight. It's my job to me; it's my career. I don't get excited no more," Jackson said. "I've got almost 40 fights. I don't get excited about anybody I fight. I just go in and do it."

When pressed on the topic, Jackson explained:

"I think Matt made a mistake when he actually said he's going to break my will, and that I'm going to overlook him. That actually lit a fire up under my ass, and actually made me train a little bit harder just so I could break his will. So I could make sure I outclass him," said Jackson.

"I think I proved tonight that I'm getting close to my peak," Tibau said. "I showed everyone that I can strike, that I can finish guys with jiu-jitsu and that my game is coming together. I'm becoming a more complete fighter every day and I know that I'm heading toward the top of this division. I love the UFC and I want to fight as much as possible so that I can keep rising in this division."

In the opening round, Oliveira held his own. Tibau's size advantage made no difference. In fact, he looked a little slow. When Tibau was able to close space in the second and move the fight near the cage, Oliveira got trapped in a bad spot. He ate a huge left and hit the deck. Tibau jumped on top and moved to mount. Oliveira decided to flip to his back where Tibau got the hooks in and tried to flatten out the fellow Brazilian. Oliveira made a big mistake by trying to rise off the canvas with Tibau on his back. That seemed to sap his energy and allowed Tibau to slap on the choke.

"I think he has some great combos and I didn't see his left hand coming," Oliveira said. "I took this fight on short notice, but there are really no excuses. I need to work on controlling my mind in fights and fighting like I know I can fight. I will be back in the UFC and I will make the necessary changes to my game."

Tibau's won two straight. He's still in search of a huge win to move into the top 10 at lightweight. The 27-year-old Brazilian is 9-5 with the promotion. His only losses have come against Nick Diaz, Jim Miller, Joe Stevenson, Melvin Guillard and Tyson Griffin.

UFC 130 postfight: Bonuses, injuries, TUF 14 news, and SEAL Team 6 was at event

- Travis Browne, Gleison Tibau, Brian Stann and Jorge Santiago all received $70,000 postfight bonuses. Browne got Knockout of the Night and Tibau's rear-naked choke of Rafaello Oliveira got him Submission of the Night. Stann and Santiago were honored for Fight of the night.

- UFC 130 produced a lot of injuries. Frank Mir beat Roy Nelson easily on the scorecards, but may have suffered a broken his jaw for his efforts. Struve, Oliveira and Michael McDonald all went to the hospital as well. Stann showed up for the presser even though he suffered a broken thumb.

- The injury news of night revolved around Brock Lesnar and his battle against diverticulitis. According to UFC president Dana White, Lesnar had surgery on Friday to remove 12 inches of his colon. Amazingly, Lesnar told White he was "a little sore." The surgery went well and Camp Lesnar hopes he can return at the start of 2012. White said Lesnar will probably lose a lot of weight on a liquid diet over the next few months.

- Quinton "Rampage" Jackson elaborated on his fractured hand reference in the Octagon following his win over Matt Hamill. Jackson said he injured his left hand back in December or January in Japan. He did so when he was horsing around with a friend.

- If Jackson legitimately has a broken hand, it may cost him a shot at a fight against Jon Jones in the fall. Lyoto Machida is also in the running. White wouldn't commit to choosing an opponent for the UFC light heavyweight champ.

- There was interesting news about Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter." White confirmed that Jason Miller and Michael Bisping will be the coaches, but their season ending fight will not take place on pay-per-view. The fight will be part of the TUF 14 Finale that airs free on Spike.

- Stann revealed the inspiring news that members of "SEAL Team 6" were in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The elite military operatives comprised the crew that located and killed Osama bin Laden.

- Stann was asked about future opponents and sounded offended at the suggestion that he could fight fellow military veteran Tim Kennedy in the future.

- White also revealed his dream for the future of TUF. While discussing international destinations for the show like the Philippines, White said he like to hold a season with 16 different TUF's in locations around the world. The UFC would close out the season by holding a TUF World Cup with the 16 winners.

- In Hollywood news, White confirmed that a first will go down in a new MMA movie starring Kevin James. The UFC is allowing the movie to use its name and some of its personalities including fighters, Joe Rogan and Bruce Buffer. White said he was asked to be in the movie, but turned down the offer.

- White elaborated on the Chael Sonnen situation confirming that the promotion won't be going renegade with the fighter and taking him to another state other than California. When asked why Zuffa is involved with allowing Josh Barnett, also in license limbo with California, to fight in Texas, White said, "That's not me. That's their deal." White was referencing Strikeforce management.

Rampage’s UFC 130 blog: Defending the takedown and putting on an exciting show

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is back and he's giving Yahoo! Sports' readers an inside look into the lead-up to his UFC 130 fight against Matt Hamill approaches.

Check out the Yahoo! Sports' exclusive blog here. Rampage talks about what he expects from Hamill:

So, Hamill has stood and traded with some guys in his career, but I am sure he knows it is bad for his health if he does that next week! For real! I've trained for all areas ? but I just want it to be exciting. I think he will try and take me down and I'm ready for him to avoid striking with me at all costs.

It sounds like Jackson has no plans of piling up points on his way to a decision victory:

I'm under no pressure to get a knockout, but I always try for the knockout. I have kept that mentality from PRIDE, where it was more important to have a great fight than win or lose. I would never criticize any fighter but at the end of the day, this is entertainment, and I want to give the fans what they paying their money for. This is the career I chose ? fighting ? and so let's fight.

We're guessing arm-wrestling Travis Pastrana was not part of Jackson's training camp preparation for Hamill's wrestling ability.

Jackson and Pastrana clashed at the press conference in Los Angeles to announce the partnership between the action sports star and Waltrip Racing on the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Tour.
