In the early 2000s, Japan was considered an equal to the U.S. on the MMA scene. The top end of PRIDE's roster was arguably better than what the UFC was offering. That started to change when the UFC bought PRIDE. At the same time, MMA's popularity spread across the U.S., more top notch athletes got involved in the sport and training methods in Japan didn't keep pace.
As a result, many of the Japanese fighter imports in recent years have been pretty disappointing. That might change if Hatsu Hioki decides to sign with the UFC. The 27-year-old is ranked No. 2 in the world at 145 pounds by the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings.
MMAjunkie reports Hioki passed on a recent off to fight at DREAM 17 and his manager announced the he's vacating his Shooto lightweight title. Hioki is going to attend UFC 131 next week in Vancouver.
"I think he's going to have a sit-down with (UFC matchmaker) Sean Shelby and try to work out a deal," Hirata said. "There is ... pride in wearing the Shooto world title, but I think that in the near future I would like to challenge a new stage of pride."
Hioki needs to break the recent slide by Japanese fighters who've come stateside. Of all Japanese-born fighters, Yushin Okami has probably had the most success in the U.S. over the last five years. Okami is scheduled to challenge Anderson Silva for the UFC middleweight title in Rio de Janeiro in August.
Shinya Aoki is incredible, but looked lousy last June in losing to Strikeforce 155-pound champ Gilbert Melendez. Aoki has won five straight since, including a victory over Lyle Beerbohm in the U.S., but is still seeking that signature win. Tatsuya Kawajiri was destroyed by Melendez in April. Takanori Gomi, 1-2 in the UFC, has had a little success in the states and Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto is still looking for his first UFC win. He lost his debut against Demetrious Johnson and is now sidelined with an injury.
Hioki is 24-4-2, winning nine of his last 10 fights. His recent win over Marlon Sandro was an eye opener, but he also lost a 2009 fight to Michihiro Omigawa. Omigawa tried the UFC recently and was beaten easily by Chad Mendes.
Will Hioki help restore Japan's fighting reputation or find the same fate so many of his fellow countryman have in recent in years in the U.S.? The search is on for someone to dethrone UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo. Maybe Hioki can be the guy.

Chris Cope beat his "Team Lesnar" teammate Chuck O'Neil to kick off the main card of "The Ultimate Fighter" season 13 finale in Las Vegas Saturday night. Cope took the fight 30-27 on all three judges' cards.
The two felt each other out for much of the first round, with Cope landing leg kicks and short jabs until Cope hit O'Neil with a left hook and the two moved into a clinch. Cope continued to move well. O'Neil became more aggressive in the final seconds of the round, hitting Cope with a barrage of punches as the first round ended.
O'Neil picked up Cope's leg kick habit in the second round, and Cope tried to employ head and body kicks to create offense. O'Neil tried to use flashy spinning back kicks, but had a hard time landing anything because of Cope's movement and O'Neil's telegraphing of every move.
With the crowd imitating his not-at-all-irritating "wooooos," Cope came on strong in the third round. After realizing the flashy kicks weren't as effective, Cope used an attack based in punches. O'Neil had no answer for Cope's striking combinations.
After the fight, Cope was happy with his performance.
"A lot of people growing up doubted me. How you like me in high-definition?" Cope said. "I don't this for the fame. I don't do it for the money."

LAS VEGAS - Clay Guida is a nightmare opponent. And he proved it againSaturday nightas he spoiled Anthony Pettis' run to the top by taking a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all cards, in the co-main event of "The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale" at the Palms.
Former WEC champion Pettis (13-2, 0-1 UFC) showed major stones by taking the fight against Guida when he could've waited for a UFC lightweight title shot to come his way. Now the 24-year-old falls back in line as the division waits for Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard to settle things in their third fight, at a date to be determinedlater this year.
This is easily the biggest win of Guida's career. It was his ninth win in the Octagon, but the story of his career had been falling short in breakthrough fights. Guida lost in the past to Kenny Florian, Roger Huerta and Diego Sanchez. Now he's won four straight and pushed himself into the mix for a title fight qualifier.
"There's a lot of 155er's in the mix right now, but I want that belt. I'm right there with the rest of these guys and I'm coming after it," said Guida.
Guida (29-11, 9-5 UFC) came out bouncing all over the Octagon. Pettis, a dynamic striker, was confused and got a little overanxious. Just 70 seconds in the fight, he had a right kick caught and was taken down. Pettis ran through a variety of submission attempts, but never got back to his feet. That rarely scores with MMA judges, who view the fighter on top as the winner.
Just 40 seconds into the second, Guida scored another big-slam takedown and controlled Pettis for until there was just two minutes left in the round. On the feet, Pettis tried a few spectacular kicks, but nothing landed. Guida scored another takedown with a minute left and moved out to a 2-0 lead.
The final round's pace was frenetic. Guida scored a takedown 40 seconds in. Two and half minutes passed before Pettis got to his feet again. Guida tried another takedown and during the scramble found himself underneath Pettis, who converted it to the mount position and eventually took his back. Pettis flattened out Guida and had one final chance to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. Guida did a brilliant job from a terrible position of squirming and shifting so Pettis got too high on his back. Seconds later, Guida slipped out the backdoor. That sealed the victory.
"Pettis is a tough son of a gun. He came at me, but we weathered the storm. We watched some old tape on him and knew to look for his hands dropping, and knew when to shoot in for the takedowns. The gameplan worked out great against him," said Guida.
It's a tough break for Pettis. He was clutch in winning the final WEC lightweight title fight against Ben Henderson back at WEC 53. That was supposed to earn him an automatic shot at the winner of the Edgar-Maynard fight at UFC 125. But that fight ended in a draw and the UFC decided to make Edgar and Maynard fight a third time. Pettis had to wait.
Edgar-Maynard III was scheduled for UFC 130. In early May, Edgar pulled out of the fight and the UFC offered a Pettis a shot to fill in against Maynard. He accepted, but was told less than 24 hours later that Maynard had backed out of the fight with an injury.

With just days to got before the finale, the semifinals are contested on "The Ultimate Fighter." Who will fight for the shiny, breakable glass plaque? Read on for spoilers and a recap.
Awkward moment of the week: The house is still reeling from Tony Ferguson's drunken attacks on Charlie Rader. Chuck O'Neil, who will fight Ferguson, says that Ferguson has burned every bridge in the house.
Apology of the week: Ferguson apologized to his team, and said he didn't remember what he said. His team didn't accept it, and they have chosen not to be in his corner when he fights.
But first, a fight that doesn't have alcohol-fueled drama. (Side note: semi-final fights are three rounds long.)
Semifinal one of the week: Ramsey Nijem (Team dos Santos) vs. Chris Cope (Team Lesnar)
Round one: Nijem starts the fight more aggressively, jabbing Cope into the fence. Cope tries to avoid the takedown, but ends up eating some of Nijem's punches. Cope still gets taken down, but then gets back to his feet. Nijem maintains control against the fence, and even when Cope breaks away, Nijem is able to land strikes.
Round two: Cope starts the round with a leg kick, but is quickly taken down by Nijem. Cope gets back to his feet, but sustains strikes from Nijem as he stands. Nijem never lets up, moving Cope against the fence, then flooding with a barrage of punches and knees until Cope finally falls, and referee Steve Mazzagatti steps into to stop the fight.
Mispronunciation of the week: "And going to the finals! Ramsey Nay-Jim!" Mazzagatti said as he raised Nijem's hand.
Semifinal two of the week: Chuck O'Neil (Team Lesnar) vs. Tony Ferguson (Team Lesnar)
Round one: O'Neil starts strong, landing jabs that appear to shake Ferguson up. Ferguson has good movement, and finally starts landing strikes two minutes into the bout. He then starts using leg kicks, but O'Neil returns the favor. With two minutes left, Ferguson lands a snapping strikes and get O'Neil to back up. Ferguson finishes the round strong, landing a flurry of strikes, even knocking O'Neil down for a second.
Round two: Ferguson starts this round more aggressively, throwing punches and moving O'Neil back into the cage. Ferguson keeps up his footwork and head movement, but O'Neil still manages a few strikes. Ferguson responds and appears to shake up O'Neil with a few jabs. They exchange leg kicks, and then a Ferguson jab causes O'Neil's nose to bleed.
Round three: Ferguson comes out with leg kicks and body shots. O'Neil begins to hobble from the leg kicks. O'Neil's corner begs for him to throw a jab when Ferguson comes in for a kick, but he isn't able to. A straight right knocks O'Neil to the ground, where Ferguson tries to follow him to the ground but isn't able to because of O'Neil's kicks. Back on their feet and with O'Neil's nose bleeding profusely, Ferguson knocks O'Neil to the ground with a hard body shot. The fight is stopped.
And that's your final: Tony Ferguson (Team Lesnar) vs. Ramsey Nijem (Team dos Santos). That will air as a part of "The Ultimate Fighter" finale which runs this Saturday on Spike. Despite an unbalanced semifinal, both teams are represented.

Add another chapter to ever present debate over females covering male-dominated sports. Much has changed since "The Patriot Missile" days with Zeke Mowatt and Lisa Olsen and yet for some it still hasn't. We can argue and debate Quinton Jackson's behavior during his UFC 130 postfight interview with Karyn Bryant until we're blue in the face, but there's no denying there still remains a sad group of athletes, media members and fans who have deep rooted dislike of females in the sports media.
Bryant joined DC and the Sunshine Man on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas to tell us what she thought of the initial Jackson conversation, and the blogosphere's reaction over the last few days.
One interesting side note to the story, the cameraman on the initial interview was actually Karyn's husband, Wade. It'd be interesting to see what most guys would do if their girlfriend or wife were in Bryant's situation on Saturday night.
