B.J. Penn, Invicta FC and Rousimar Palhares: The Morning News Roundup – 7.28.12

Other than the announcement from Cesar Gracie that Nick Diaz would like to fight Fedor Emelianenko (or something like that), it seems the Olympics are garnering all the attention, with Quidditch and Battle Royale among today's events (go District 6!  Wahoo!).  But there is some solid MMA news out there, hidden among the headlines and blurbs, and because I like you, I went through the trouble of gathering it in one place for you to read.  You're welcome.

  • B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald have signed up for the more stringent Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) testing ahead of their UFC 152 meeting.  Remember: athletic commissions already screen fighters for banned substances, so what Penn and MacDonald are doing goes above and beyond what's required.  Bravo, guys.

Penn has been one of the more vocal voices when fighters have failed tests, always insisting his brand of fighting is 100 percent natural.  On September 22 he and MacDonald will be totally clean, confirmed by the VADA.

  • The Invicta Fighting Championships weigh-ins were last night, and everything is a "go" for the all-female MMA card tonight (broadcast for free on their site).  If you tune in, keep an eye on the main event, which features veteran submission specialist Shayna Baszler (who trains under Josh Barnett and once won a bout with a Twister, which is cool beans) taking on undefeated rising star Sara McMann (who won the Silver Medal in Freestyle wrestling in the 2004 Summer Olympics).  Because of her credentials, comparisons have been made between McMann and Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey - who took the Bronze Medal in judo in the 2008 Summer Olympics - but I say McMann needs a bit more seasoning.  Watch and judge for yourself, though.  I mean, who the heck am I?

  • Rousimar Palhares, a.k.a. "Toquinho", a.k.a. "that crazy guy who tears off legs and will someday go bonkers in the Octagon and have a psychotic break", won't require surgery for that knee injury that forced him out of his UFC 150 bout against Yushin Okami.  Tatame was kind enough to write something in English about it, so props to them.

That's it for now.  If the stream is solid enough, I will be watching tonight's Invicta FC and tweeting about what I see.  Follow or don't.  It doesn't matter to me.  I'm used to talking to myself.

UFC on FOX 4, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Referee Cam: Morning News Roundup – 8.2.12

The news cycle is ramping up thanks to the impending UFC on FOX 4 event on Saturday.  What does that mean?  Essentially, just that the UFC apparatus has put all the puzzle pieces in a pile in and around the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and the multitudes of media are flitting about assembling their own portions of the puzzle for mass consumption.  Cameras are held aloft at open workouts, microphones are stuck in the face of any fighter of relevance, and there are questions — loads and loads of questions.  Here, then, is your morning news roundup, which is pretty much just a bunch of pieces that, when taken together, form an Ansel Adams-esque panorama of inevitable violence.

  • You ready for some video?  Here's Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at yesterday's open workout.   Here's something on Mike Swick.  Here's media superstar Ariel Helwani rapping with Lyoto Machida.  Here's Helwani with Brandon Vera.  Here's Helwani with Shogun.  You know, the funny thing about Helwani is that I sometimes see him walking around his neighborhood (we live about 15 minutes away from each other), and he's always got that microphone in hand and he's interviewing everyone — the mailman, passing joggers, homeless people.  Everyone.  That, folks, is commitment to your work.

  • Saturday night will see the introduction of the "ref cam", which is exactly what it sounds like.  While this nifty contraption has never before been used in the Octagon, it has been done in other promotions.  Want a bit of trivia that you can use to impress your friends?  The first time a ref cam was used in MMA was back in 1997, in the Australian UFC.  The Australian UFC had absolutely no connection to the real UFC, they were simply a promotion in the Land Down Under that didn't care one bit about observing copyright and trademark laws.  Some good fights, though.  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Mario Sperry won one of their tournaments.

  • Yours truly was a guest on the Darce Side Radio show, which is an Internet podcast hosted by MMA journo Mike Stets.  UFC on FOX 4 fighter Nam Phan was also on.  You can check the show out here.

In addition to the graduation and Memorial Day activities we enjoyed this past weekend, we also managed to squeeze in a ride. (I actually squeezed in a solo ride, too.) Erik Perez Scores Fastest KO in Bantamweight History

Greg Jackson-trained bantamweight Erik Perez clearly had somewhere else he needed to be Saturday night, so he wasted no time in taking out Massachusetts native Ken Stone.  Coming forward in their first exchange winging a right hook that was more guided missile than fist, Perez clipped his foe cleanly on the chin, and when Stone face-planted and rolled over, Stone followed him down and starched him with even more punches.  Referee Herb Dean jumped in at the 17-second mark, and the victory via TKO — and new record among the 135-pounders — belonged to Perez.

The win is Perez's second in as many UFC appearances.  In his Octagon debut, he deftly arm barred TUF veteran John Albert

Jon Jones Sentenced for DWI, Joins Elite UFC Club

UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones was sentenced today for the Driving While Intoxicated charge he incurred in a May 19 incident in Binghamton, N.Y.  The sentence handed down by the judge included a $1,000 fine and suspension of his driver's license for a period of six months.  Jones will face no jail time.  The MMA superstar, who will be taking on Dan Henderson at UFC 151 in September, had previously pleaded guilty.

Take it away, MMAFighting:

In his only official public statement released in July, Jones expressed remorse and regret over the incident.  "Mr. Jones wishes to express the following to his fans, friends, and, most of all, his family: By pleading guilty on May 29, Mr. Jones accepted responsibility for his actions.  This process has been a learning experience for this young man.  He is remorseful for his conduct, but thankful for the opportunity to accept responsibility and to grow as a person.  This experience has motivated Mr. Jones to achieve his maximum potential both professionally and personally."

With the DWI on his record, Jones officially joins the ranks of a very elite UFC club — a club whose members have all made poor decisions and suffered severe legal ramifications for them.  Other members include:

  • Former UFC light-heavyweight champ Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, who literally went on a rampage (of the vehicular variety) and led police on a merry chase through Newport Beach, C.A., before being arrested.  Unlike Jones, Jackson avoided wrapping his sweet ride around a telephone pole.  He was eventually sentenced to three years of probation.

  • Top UFC middleweight contender Chael Sonnen, who engaged in some shady real estate dealings in his home state of Oregon and was soon on the hook for mortgage fraud and money laundering.  Sonnen pleaded guilty and was subject to 24 months of probation, a $10,000 fine and forfeiture of his real estate license.

  • UFC lightweight competitor Josh Neer, who was arrested for drunk driving after leading police on a high-speed chase through Des Moines, I.A.  Neer received a suspended sentence for his joyride because, hey, it's Iowa.

  • Former UFC heavyweight competitor Bobby Hoffman, who lost to Josh Barnett at UFC 34, then promptly beat his new bride silly.  Hoffman spent a significant amount of time in the pokey for that outburst of domestic violence, and never set foot in the Octagon again.

As a reigning champ at the time of his legal troubles, I guess this sort of makes Jones the leader of the club.  Am I right?

Lyoto Machida Earns KO and Shot at the Belt: UFC on FOX 4 Main Card Rundown

It's rare when every bout on a UFC main card is spectacular, but the stars aligned perfectly for UFC on FOX 4.  Mike Swick returned to knock someone's lights out, Joe Lauzon nailed another submission, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Brandon Vera had an absolute slobberknocker, and Lyoto Machida put Ryan Bader to sleep.  And at the end of it all, UFC president Dana White announced who of the four main card light-heavyweights had earned their shot at the belt.

  • In his first bout back after a lengthy hiatus, TUF 1 veteran Swick absorbed a world of hurt at the hands of DaMarques Johnson, and then delivered it right back ten-fold.  In the opening seconds, "Quick" plastered Johnson with a right hand — his best weapon — and though Johnson took it, the TUF 9 veteran wisely sought his fortunes on the ground.  There, Johnson was large and in charge, pounding on Swick from above and forcing him on the defensive.  Then came Round Two, which saw Swick catch a Johnson kick, throw him down, and land another crushing right square on Johnson's jaw.  Johnson was out cold.  The official time of the knockout was 1:20 of the second round.

  • Not to be outdone by Swick and Johnson's thriller of an opener, lightweights Lauzon and Jamie Varner went at it in a nonstop back-and-forth melee.  Utilizing his always-crisp boxing, former WEC champ Varner peppered the ace grappler with punches to the face and body, prompting Lauzon to constantly cover up.  But Varner lost steam with each passing minute, so the latter portions of the rounds had Lauzon finding back-control or mount and threatening with subs.  Varner changed things up in the third round by going for takedowns — a ploy that provided Lauzon with the perfect opportunity to sweep him, out-scramble him, and eventually trap him in a triangle choke.  Varner tapped out at 2:44 of Round Three.

  • The biggest mistake you can make when fighting former light-heavyweight champ Machida is to take the bait on any one of the traps he lays.  Unfortunately, that's exactly what TUF winner Bader did.  Throughout the first round of their co-main event bout, Bader struggled to find an opening on the elusive karate man, while Machida established his range with kicks and waited patiently like a spider in a web.  In Round Two, Bader leaped forward looking to punch and he was stuck — or, more accurately, struck.  It was a short right that did it, and Bader was unconscious.  The official time of the knockout was 1:32 of the second round.

  • Anyone who thought Vera was going to be a pushover for Shogun has to be eating a lot of crow right now, as the "Truth" took it to the Brazilian at every turn, and lasted deep into the fourth round against the legendary fighter.  Vera began the bout by planting a kick to Shogun's midsection, and from then on, it was clear that Vera was unafraid to stand and trade.  But the former PRIDE FC and UFC champ sought the takedown frequently, and when he was successful, he did his best to batter Vera from top position.  Did Shogun win rounds?  He did, but it was by no means a blow out, and whenever the action returned to the feet, Vera nailed him with elbows, punches, knees and kicks.  The end came at 4:09 in Round Four, in a sequence that had Shogun penetrating Vera's defenses with his fists and dropping the Truth against the cage, thereby giving him the victory via TKO.

Who was more impressive — Machida or Shogun?  For his knockout of Bader, Dana White chose Machida, and now the "Dragon" gets the next crack at the UFC light-heavyweight belt.
